Award Season in 2018

I’m really going to miss The Americans. Also if the Emmys want to do one of those performance wins that are really for the whole series and not just one season (ala Kyle Chandler) then I’ll take one for Keri Russell. Heck I’ll give it to her for this season alone.

It had a boring season last year, but the rest were stellar especially seasons three and four. Season four was really great. I think that's when they finally got more Emmy recognition. Elizabeth Jennings was a bada$$ and completely terrible person but somehow I found myself rooting for her. Keri Russell and Matthew Rhys were both amazing.

It's funny, but I'll always remember the episode where Elizabeth beats the crap out of Margo Martindale's character. Elizabeth just lost it on her. It was like Felicity flipped out on grandma.

^I'll try to get back into it. I watched season one when it first aired though so I feel like I'll have to go back. Gahh I have way too many series to catch up with.

I've just started the second season of Handmaid's Tale. The end of the first episode is... really something.

I watched Deadpool 2 and Solo over the weekend. I may be in the minority, but I much preferred Solo. I loved the first Deadpool and might enjoy this one more on a second viewing, but it’s like all the things that made the first one great seemed “been there, done that” on the second. Ryan Reynolds was great, but I just didn’t think was as cleverly written as the first. Jokes fell flat to me, and no one in the theater was laughing either. On the other hand, I thought Solo was far superior to Rogue One. It was just a really fun, action movie. When it was over and I was reminded Ron Howard directed it, I thought “oh, that’s why I liked it so much!” And Alden Ehrenriech is a star. He has so much charisma- reminded me of a mix of Harrison Ford and Leonardo DiCaprio.

I binged GLOW over the weekend and now I’m a little obsessed. I’m still going with Rachel Brosnahan over Alison Brie and the others. She’s been my front runner since Maisal came out, and I especially want her to win now after her crappy summer. Her poor family. Also I want her to get at least one win in before JLD and Candice Bergen come back. Plus there’s no guarantee the rest of Maisal’s seasons will be as good. I don’t know how long her show will go, but Candice was a repeat winner like JLD. Candice removed her name after a few wins or she would’ve had more.

I think GLOW can get by with Betty Gilpin in supporting for season one, but season two would definitely be category fraud. I don’t know if she’ll get in though. Also Kia Stevens was amazing in season two, so I hope people don’t forget her next year.

I’m going to date myself, but I remember watching the original goofy GLOW show when I was a kid. I watched the documentary, and it reminded me of all the characters I forgot. I could only remember Mt. Fiji, Americana, plus Hollywood and Vine. I can’t believe I forgot about Matilda the Hun she used to wrestle Fiji all the time.

^ I'm obsessed with Glow

I'm glad I'm not the only one. I only know one person who watched season one, and it was just okay to her.
Once I finally started it, I couldn't stop. I finished season one in either a day or two. Then went to visit family the weekend the second season came out. When I got home, I watched season two in one day. It was easy for me since I was a teacher bored on summer break. I didn't realize how bored I'd get by taking the summer off from workshops.

Anyway I loved all the actresses on the show, but I'm really hoping Betty Gilpin becomes a superstar. You're probably too busy but if you haven't read her essays or watched any of her solo interviews, they're great. If she doesn't win the Emmy this year, I definitely want her winning it next year for season two's fourth episode. She really nailed everything they threw at her in that episode. Comedy, drama, singing, wrestling, it didn't matter she kicked butt. She was amazing in other episodes, but for the comedy category I think four is her best bet.

Btw I watched an Emmy panel last week and the line from season one about Liberty Belle's three favorite Americans was a Betty Gilpin improv. Alison was saying they follow the script during the normal scenes, but when they are their wrestling characters, they get to do a little more improvisation. I like learning little behind the scenes tidbits like that.

I'm not expecting the CMA or the ACM to follow suit, but the IBMA have responded to criticism that the same people win too often by publishing all the names which got through to the second ballot. The first round involves write-in votes for any name the member likes - those who get 10 write in choices are the ones who appear on this second round list. There is clearly a very wide range represented, of styles, and of levels of industry involvement - but only those who make the top 5 in this round of voting will get to the final stage, It's at that stage that the more widely known names tend to collect multiple votes.

Edit - Apologies! I saw the title of this thread in the new posts, and thought it was about award shows in general. I've since realized it's a sub-topic of "movies" - so obviously not the right place for the above post.

I saw The Blackkklansman(I think that's how it is spelled). I liked it. My favorites never line up with the critics or Oscar nominations so take my opinion with a grain of salt. I will say the theatre was really empty even for a Friday afternoon.

Editing to add to my post since nobody else has posted.

I saw Crazy Rich Asians today. It was beautifully made. I really enjoyed it. I've been missing rom coms lately. The theater was really packed for a Sunday afternoon.

^ Blackkklansman seems to be a front runner so don't sell yourself short!

omg hahaha I've made all my friends watch glow and they LOVE it. Betty is f*cking amazing. She's so good. She's the ONLY good part in the American Gods adaptation and she's only in a few scenes, And she was great in Nurse Jackie. Im so happy she found a series lead breakout role. I havent watched her interviews actually which is odd for me when I like someone. I usually watch their interviews, so ill def do that!

I initially watched American Gods for Gillian A. and Chenoweth. While I loved the jobs they did, Betty's is the only character that stood out to me. (I kinda liked the leprechaun or whatever he was too) She stole that entire episode away from poor Emily Browning. I was so bored and then it really picked up with her freak out. I didn't know who Betty was, but I remember being annoyed when she just disappeared after the car scene.

She he has a lot of movies coming out next year but none of their plots are really blowing me away. Maybe I'm wrong, and she'll be the 2019 breakout actress. She's probably still in that working actress desperate for insurance state of mind. I think she's kinda breaking out now but there's still so many who don't have a clue who she is. I watched American Gods but didn't learn her name until my summer Glow obsession.

Between cancelled school and then strep throat this past week, I was able to binge some shows I didn't get around to watching. I loved The Crown and Killing Eve, but I was kinda Meh on Fleabag.

I also gave another episode of Game of Thrones a try. I think I'm just going to have to give up on it. The siblings incest really makes me hate it. I get that marriage between 2nd cousins used to be a thing with wealthy families in the past. It's gross to me, but I understand historically it used to be somewhat common. Siblings are just a no go even in a fake story.
