- Daryl Morey, manager of Houston Rocket, tweeted "Fight for freedom, stand with Hong Kong" picture with no commentary
- China was extremely offended by a general and vague comment made by a not famous US citizen in the US on a US platform that's already banned in China
- Morey deleted the "offensive" tweet and apologized for offending Mother China
- NBA gave in to China and posted on the Chinese Twitter knock-off that the tweet was "inappropriate", that they respected China's culture, that his comment was his personal view, and was not officially from the NBA or the Houston Rocket. They added, however, that people have the right to comment on things they're interested in.
- in Tokyo, NBA boss said: "Daryl Morey is supported in terms of his ability to exercise his freedom of expression"
- China is extremely upset and has announced a full-on NBA ban with a statement saying "Any speech challenging a country's national sovereignty and social stability is not within the scope of freedom of speech", even as such speech was made by a US citizen in the US on a US platform banned in China

If he wants to support the Hong Kong protests, that's obviously his choice. He should have never backed down from the post. He does not answer to the Chinese government. The NBA buckling to pressure is cowardly.

How big is the NBA in China? Is it that large of a revenue source that the NBA and its owners would cower to "offended" individuals there?

According to the British Insiders article, the games were watched by 500 million in the last season and they stand to lose "hundreds of millions of dollars". Fox says China's stake is worth $4 billion (not revenue).

NBA makes around $8 billion every year.

The difference is that in China, there are no real private companies. Everything is controlled by the state so its boycott would be much more effective than say, UK trying to stage a boycott.

I don't get what China is expecting though? Did they expect the NBA to disqualify Houston Rockets? To fire its manager? To arrest him? To execute him? An apology - which China certainly doesn't deserve - was the most they were ever going to get.

A Chinese man posted on Weibo saying he supports the Houston Rockets, and he has been promptly arrested.

In fact, this *is* unfortunately going to affect the freedom of speech in the US and everywhere else. Business owners and important people are going to self-censor for fear of retaliation from the Chinese dictatorial regime.

A few days ago, China banned South Park because of an episode about Chinese censorship. Talk about irony.

I feel so sorry for all of of you people who want freedom of speech and do not have it. I want to shake some people
Over here when they think it is ok to silence people because they do not agree with them. Of people actually had to live in a communist country like China I hope that they would change their minds.

This whole thing reminds me of a quote from The Revd. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.: "Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere".

I just cannot believe China is now censoring Americans speaking in America on an American platform that they banned already.

There's also a gamer who just won a competition being expelled, banned for a year, and confiscated his prize money by Blizzard (China bought shares) because he used the slogan "reclaim Hong Kong, the revolution of our times".

Chinazi is really raining on the world, now even coming to get the Land of the Free.
