I'm not sure how I feel seeing "Black Panther" nominated. On one hand, it's good that a comic book movie broke through for a nomination. On the other hand, it makes me upset all over again that "The Dark Knight" didn't get nominated when it is far superior.

Also, very surprised "Bohemian Rhapsody" was nominated for Best Picture. It was enjoyable enough but not Best Picture worthy.

Have they changed the criteria for Musical/Comedy? I thought "A Star is Born" and "Bohemian Rhapsody" would be in that category. I mean, "Walk The Line" was in that category.

Blackkklansman- Hmmmmmmmm. Im trying to digest my feelings of this as a movie. I was nervous that at the end it was going to be wrapped up in a little bow and for a hot second I felt like thats where it was going, but then they took a right turn and I was glad they did. Because my whole thoughts were that the KKK still exist and I really wished I lived in a time where this movie was coming out and it was truly about HISTORY that didnt exist anymore. But alas people suck. Performance wise, I havent seen any other person likely to be nominated in Best Supporting besides Driver so he's my top pick at the moment LOL. But I do think he did really really good. The more I see of him the more I like him. I think John David Washington also did a great job. Id put him slightly ahead of Cooper, unfortunately my favorite performance would be Gosling but it looks like he's not even going to be nominated. As far as what Ive seen nominated for Globes in Drama I would put this above Black Panther and A Star is Born. And now I'm off to read and compare the real story, because if I recall there was some controversy surrounding this movie but I don't remember what it was.

Yeah I liked Blackkklansman the best of the contenders I've seen so far. I also liked both Washington and Driver better than Cooper. I enjoyed A Star is Born, but it is so over praised to me. Neither the movie nor the music blew me away.

People were surprised by Emily Blunt's two SAG nominations, but I'm not surprised. My gut told me she'd get two SAG nominations. They were one of the few groups to nominate her for The Girl on the Train. She's doing a great job covering all the bases genre wise in her career. She'll never have an issue getting typecast. I'd like to see another comedy from her. It's been awhile.

I would probably rank the possible contenders I've seen in the following order. Actually it's probably 1 & 2 then no preference with the other three. I think Roma comes to Netflix this week, so I'll try to check it out.

Blackkklansman
A Quiet Place
Crazy Rich Asians
A Star is Born
Black Panther

BTW The tv side of the SAG nominations is a mess. Neither Matthew Rhys nor Keri Russell received a nomination, but somehow the show made ensemble. Same thing with Atlanta which had multiple Emmy nominations. Also I watched the first episode of Ozark but wasn't blown away. I guess I need to watch the rest of the episodes.

Betty Gilpin was the highlight of GLOW this season not Alison Brie. I love Alison in her role, but she wasn't the best performer on the show this season. Last year yes but not this year. I have to say I'll be ticked if Betty doesn't at least get one award somewhere for her great second season. Also I think Lily Tomlin and Jane Fonda were nominated just because they're who they are. I'm just not interested in The Kominsky Method, so I don't know if it's another famous names situation like Lily and Jane.

^ I’ll post a more thoughtful response later I’m bout to run outta the house. But quick take- the more I’ve thought about a Star is born this last month since I’ve see it. The more I dislike it. I started out thinking it’s okay but now I actually dislike it

Widows is an excellent in the moment film. I had a great theater-going experience with this one. Personally, I think Steve McQueen is one of the best directors out there, and this is shot masterfully. It's slick, thrilling, well-paced, and somehow both broad and introspective. It is very, very clearly a Gillian Flynn script. If you liked Gone Girl, Sharp Objects, you'll like this story; if you disliked the prior two, you'll hate this as well. I do have to say that the more time has passed the less I like the script and in particular the Liam Neeson twist. It sort of falls apart on reflection, but that doesn't take away from the thrill of the initial viewing. Viola Davis is a QUEEN, oh my god. She carried this film wonderfully, and this is a star turn for Elizabeth Debicki, she's easily the standout of the supporting cast. I also loved Brian Tyree Henry in this. Daniel Kaluuya was great but his character was, to me, a little underused and his arc didn't wrap up well. Anyway, I'm disappointed that Davis, Debicki and McQueen don't have a chance for this.

The Favourite is pretty spectacular. Colman, Stone and Weisz are incomparable. Without having seen all of the contenders, I really, really want to see Colman win the Oscar for this. The way she weaves comedy and tragedy is nothing short of superb. And Stone and Weisz go head to head with her beautifully. On the surface it's a surprising performance from Stone, but in retrospect, it makes perfect sense. Her performance works so well because she's immensely charismatic and likeable, and you have no problem rooting for her at the start. Then the film does the whole switcheroo and Stone nails it. Weisz is phenomenal as well. This is finally a character she can sink her teeth into; she's biting and caustic and absolutely perfect. I seriously cannot praise the performances enough. Even though Emma Stone and Rachel Weisz are in no way, shape or form supporting here. This is simply a film with three leads. Anyway, the script is wonderful in its originality, not quite as batsh*t as most Yorgos films (he didn't write it) but still quirky, weird and entertaining. I will say that the tonal shift in the final third probably could've been handled a little better. There was about a twenty minute stretch that I thought worked solely because of the ladies' performances. OH and let me shout out Nicholas Hoult! He was wickedly good. I prefer his performance to just about every other supporting actor I've seen this year. He's definitely ahead of Driver on my personal ballot so I'm sad he hasn't gained any traction whatsoever. But back to the techs. The cinematography is jarring, and you do get used to it throughout the film, but I still think I would've preferred that there weren't so many fish eye shots throughout. All in all, my favorite of the year so far.

Despite two central performances that are very good, Green Book was very disappointing for me. The sad thing is this is an inherently interesting subject matter--the premise is great. But I think the screenplay is the weakest point; it relies way too heavy on stereotypes and cheap jokes. There are a lot of interesting bits that are food for thought and could become discussion pieces, but the film just magics them away. Mahershala Ali in particular is great here, but his character is peripheral; Ali brings as much characterization as he can here, but I was left wishing the film had told the stories of both of these men, rather than revolving around Mortensen's character. Speaking of, Mortensen is good, it's a very committed performance and I won't be mad if he's nominated. For SAG, I'd say Washington > Mortensen > Cooper (the only three I've seen--Gosling in First Man is better than all of them, though). Anyway, give Linda Cardellini more role 2k19, please.

^^^ Hey guys I updated my post.

Roma- Oye. So I knew this wasnt going to be like, a lighthearted film. But man is it down right sad. I do love the black and white of it. As far as foreign language film, I havent seen any other yet to compare it to. I think id put it ahead of Cooper as best director but under Lee. And its also the only screenplay nod Ive seen so far as well. Im a bit annoyed that the lead actress, Yalitza Aparicio isn't getting any acknowledgement in the lead actress category. I def think she deserves it and Id put her at least ahead of Gaga, whos the only performance I've seen in that category. As far as a movie overall, I do understand why its missing out in the Best Picture categories. Its weird, you can have all the right pieces, a good director, a good story, a great lead actress performance, yet I still feel like its missing SOMETHING. Im not sure. It was very slow and it is truly just about a year in someones life, so if thats not your thing then probably not for you. Its not an extraordinary story is what I'm saying but its good. And like i said, its depressing.

Mary Poppins Returns- I didnt go into this with high expectations. I just went into it wanting a fun, light disney movie. And that is what I got. Emily Blunt is completely lovely in the role, fits perfectly. Lin grows on you I think hahaha. It was much much darker than the first one, and it seems like they realized the first one doesn't really have a driving plot so they gave this one a major plot thats kind of a downer throughout the whole thing. And I do think over 2 hours is much to long for a kids movie. But overall I did enjoy it and I would watch it again. I have to say, the Best Actress Comedy/Musical Category for the Globes has some really solid performances in it. Might end up being my favorite category.

The Favourite-Im going to start off by saying, the performances are completely captivating, from all three ladies. They all deserve their noms, I will be interested to see if both Emma and Rachel get them for the Oscars. Coleman is a looooon but a great one hahahaha. Now for the movie itself. I wanted to love it much more than I did. I liked it but didnt LOVE it. Also I freaking hated how it ended. And the way it was shot made me very dizzy, Im not the biggest fan of constant use of a fisheye lens. I do think the writing was very clever. Final verdict, I just wish I liked the movie more than I did. I think I went in with too high of expectations.

On the Basis of Sex- Now, this hasnt gotten any noms but I'm including my review anyways. This is probably my favorite of the movies Ive watched lately. I can understand why it doesn't get a nom for picture or writer etc, but I am disappointed theres no love for Felicity. She does a great great job as RBG. I thought the exact story they picked out of her life to tell was perfect and I totally teared up a bit at the end. Id also just like to state how much I love Armie Hammers voice btw. Its so distinct hahaha. Overall, great movie and disappointed by its lack of award love, interested to see its reviews once its released.

Crazy Rich Asians- This really had all the makings of a classic rom com. For some reason I never had an interest in seeing it when it originally came out. I was like pass, but I'm so glad the Globes nominated it for so many things so I had to watch it haha. It was funny and endearing, I thought Constance Wu was so lovely. I was a bit annoyed that Nick young didnt tell her character about howwwww rich he was. I feel like after a year if she's going to meet your family you should truly warn someone about stuff like that. Not just down play it. But again the really fits into a rom com troupe. I think Id totally watch it again. Also shout out to Gemma Chan who I think is super great ever since I've watched her in Humans. I want her to get a leading lady movie at some point.

Vice- Bale is my front runner at the moment now. He is incredible. Rockwell is solid. Not enough for a win though. Adams will get her 6th nomination for sure. I don’t think she’ll get the win, stacked category. But she’s very very good. At least I understood the damn movie unlike the big short. VERY VERY big short like, in the way it’s shot and edited. You can tell it’s by the same guy. I liked the movie but it was a bit all over the place. I think that style worked for the big short I’m not sure it worked as well for this. I think I would have like a more straight forward movie. Not with all the random cuts to animals and **** like that.

If Beale Street Could Talk- so. I think that. I just don’t like Berry Jinkins movies. they’re arent bad movies I just don’t like the pacing and the dialogue. Which can totally be someone else’s jam, that’s fine. I think I’d put Blackkklansman above it and maybe SLIGHTLY a Star is born. Maybe on par with ASIB. Oh I’ve closed out best supporting actress!!!!! I just realized. Okay. Regina King was good but with who she’s up against I don’t think it’s a close competition. Claire Foy is my top in that category but she might miss out on Oscar noms. I enjoyed Rachel and Emma more as well and Amy Adams. Regina want bad at all, it’s just that’s a super stacked category and she has like two good scenes, most of the time she isn’t in it

Destroyer- this isn’t in the running for any category except lead actress so I’ll just put most of my focus on that. Kidman is pretty great. One of those types of movie where the lead looks so drained, looked like a haggered skeleton. I feel like Coleman and Gaga are shoe ins for nominations. I’ll be interested in to see what else wrestles up nominations. I feel like Kidman could sneak in. I prefer her performance to Gaga’s. Probably on par with Coleman. The movie was just okay.

OK I literally can't wait for this. This is my favorite Ruth Bader Ginsburg case so I can't wait to see how they adapt it.

Bohemian Rhapsody. They managed to make a Freddie Mercury biopic boring. How? Don't get me wrong, Rami Malek is great, but that's where it starts and ends. Every other character is either completely dull (the bandmates, Aidan Gillen) or a caricature (Allen Leech, oh my god). Lucy Boynton is pretty good as Mary. It's very paint by numbers, I can't even remember half of it and I saw it yesterday. And I say this as a big Queen fan. That's all.

Mary, Queen of Scots. I went into this with low expectations, so I think that helps, lol. It's odd, though, it felt like two different films. The English court was well done (only like 25% of the movie). The Scottish court was so over the top it was almost funny. You can tell the director has a theatre background--not in a good way. But I love the story of Mary, Queen of Scots, so I was entertained. Saoirse Ronan was fine, but she couldn't overcome some of the material she had. It's probably the first performance from her that I haven't loved. Margot Robbie is surprisingly much better as Elizabeth I, as she brings a lot of depth and nuance to her. None of the supporting performances stand out (in a positive way). The movie looks gorgeous though. Like I said I still enjoyed it but I think it was for the camp more than anything else.

Everyone I saw Mary Poppins Returns with liked it including my mom who didn't want to see it at all. She only went for family bonding time. Emily Blunt was great. To be honest I don't know if I would've seen the sequel if it wasn't for her being Mary. I'm actually surprised Mary Poppins Returns isn't dominating the box office. It's a great family movie for the holidays. The songs were not better than the original, but still good. My niece left the theater singing the last song. I also think Mary needed another solo. I enjoyed it though and would watch it again.

I've taken a pass on The Favourite for now until it hits streaming or something like that. I was excited about it because I love Rachel Weisz, but I've heard from a lot of people who just hate it. It doesn't really make me want to pay to see it.

I'll eventually get around to watching Roma during the break, but right now I'm in a Keeley Hawes binging rabbit hole after watching The Bodyguard. I had no idea who she was until now, and she's apparently been around forever. I knew several of the other actors just not her.

Whoooo? Little ole me? I cannot imagine why :D

Green Book- I went into this movie with really really mixed feelings. Its never a good look when one of the families being represented isnt pleased with how the family member is shown. But I have to admit. I did enjoy it. i enjoyed it quite a bit actually. And part of me feels bad for enjoying it because I can see the issue of how it basically lets a racist white guy be the hero. But the performances were sooooo good. And I just really liked it. UGH. It was the kind of drama (even though its in the comedy category) that I like. It was easy to watch and a story I could follow. I feel like so many of the movies this award season has been all over the place that its taken be a hot second to find a movie Ive enjoyed that isn't animated or a kids movie lol. SIGGHH

wellllll Ive closed out a few Globe categories, personal rankings below will make predictions on award day which is in one week!-

Best Motion Picture- Musical or Comedy

1) Green Book
2) Mary Poppins Returns
3) Crazy Rich Asians
4) The Favorite
5) Vice

Best Supporting Actress

1) Claire Foy, First Man
2) Emma Stone, The Favorite
3) Rachel Weisz, The Favorite
4) Amy Adams, Vice
5) Regina King, If Beale Street Could Talk

* this category is stacked by the way. Besides Foy who is my clear favorite it took me awhile to rank the other performances

Best Director

1) Peter Farrelly, Green Book
2) Spike Lee, Blackkklansman
3) Alfonso Cuaron, Roma
4) Adam McKay, Vice
5) Bradley Cooper, A Star is Born

*I kept saying id be fine if cooper won Director, but then i did my ranking and shockingly found him at the bottom. I truly believe directors go hand in hand with actors performances and at the end of the day I think all the other movies as a whole their actors had better performances

Best Screenplay

1) Green Book
2) The Favourite
3) Roma
4) Vice
5) If Beale Street Could Talk

So, if you ever see it spelt the favorite its because I'm tired of going back and fixing the autocorrect

Watched two non Globe nominated movies yesterday

Welcome to Marwen- I don’t think it’s as bad as the reviews are saying it is. I think the concept is quite great. Story has a few things that I’m like meh about but it was enjoyable. It’s kinda sad too but overall not terrible

Widows- this is playing in both critics choice and SAG awards this year. I thought the cast was strong. But I think I went into it thinking it’s the completely wrong movie. I thought it would either be a full on action movie or a fun oceans 8 type heist movie. Wasn’t really either. I thought it was okay. I don’t think id ever watch it again though

Anyway, give Linda Cardellini more role 2k19, please.

I never realized you said this and thats gunna be A NO FOR ME. This woman has haunted me since Cory cheated on Topanga with her and almost destroyed their relationship. She will always be stalking home wrecking Lauren to me. NOOOOO

SO. I saw 51 new released movies this year. And I have to say. Coming up with a top 10 is very hard because I'm not highly impressed. Only 2 in my top 10 are award movies.

1) On The Basis of Sex
2) Solo: A Star Wars Story
3) Love, Simon
4) First Man
5) Green Book
6) Mary Poppins Returns
7) Crazy Rich Asians
8) Private Life
9) Game Night
10) Avengers Infinity War

^Jesus, I cannot believe The Favourite didn't make your top 10. I get not loving it, because it's been way hyped but HANNAH. Also, I really liked Sol, didn't realize you did, too!

Is this a good time to say that I never watched Boy Meets World? (That's the show, right?)

I'll eventually get around to watching Roma during the break, but right now I'm in a Keeley Hawes binging rabbit hole after watching The Bodyguard. I had no idea who she was until now, and she's apparently been around forever. I knew several of the other actors just not her.

ALSO I really want to watch this! I love Richard Madden and Keeley Hawes and have heard such good things!!!

^ Bodyguard straddles that line between "It's amazing" and "It's so overrated." I really liked it. It's kind of a tale of two different halves. I found the first three episodes more interesting in a "What's going to happen next" sort of way. The second half is basically an investigation.

Also speaking of Keeley, did you watch Line of Duty a few years ago? I found it on Hulu after The Bodyguard and Keeley is phenomenal in it. I found the main characters boring compared to her character. After watching I think Lindsay Denton is one of the most interesting characters I've seen on television.
