His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej, the monarch of the Kingdom of Thailand, recently passed away. He was the world's longest reigning monarch till yesterday. Also known as Rama IX, he belongs to a dynasty that has reigned the kingdom since 1782. Despite being a constitutional monarch with limited power instead of an absolute monarch, he gained a huge respect of the people and was considered a great king. There were many political changes in the kingdom under his reign. He was born in Massachusetts when his father studied public health at Harvard, but I don't think he had American citizenship. His father was a son of King Rama V and a brother of both Kings Rama VI and Rama VII. He succeeded his brother Rama VIII in 1946 after the King had been accidentally shot. He was also a talented jazz musician and a sailor who won a Gold Medal in the Southeast Asian Games. There are less than 2 months before his 89th birthday.
His only son, the 64-year-old Crown Prince Maha Vajiralongkorn, is announced to succeed him as King Rama X
