Carrie Underwood Kicks Off Las Vegas Residency: See Photos/Videos & Setlist

Music Mayhem December 2, 2021

Carrie Underwood kicked off her highly-anticipated Las Vegas residency, REFLECTION: The Las Vegas Residency, at the brand-new Resorts Theatre on the Vegas strip on Wednesday evening (Dec. 1).
The seven-time GRAMMY Award winner and country music superstar is the first artist to perform on the stage of the 5,000-seat world-class theatre, which is the largest and tallest in Las Vegas.
“It’s such a special honor to be the first artist to perform on this incredible stage in a brand new, beautiful, state-of-the-art theatre at such an exciting new destination as Resorts World Las Vegas,” Underwood previously shared in a press release. “I’m so proud of this show and so happy to finally get to share it with the amazing audiences here in Las Vegas.”
REFLECTION: The Las Vegas residency celebrates Underwood’s career and found Underwood performing some of her greatest hits, including “Cowboy Casanova,” “Dirty Laundry,” “Blown Away,” “Jesus, Take The Wheel,” “Before He Cheats,” “Church Bells,” among many others. See the full set list below.
“The show title refers to the fact that this show will reflect the amazing journey I’ve been on for the past 16 years, as well as a glimpse into what lies ahead,” Underwood shared.

The show, which marks Underwood’s first-ever Las Vegas Residency, featured top-notch production that brought Underwood’s chart-topping hits to life. Her stellar production included special effects, state-of-the-art technology, a waterfall, pyrotechnics, massive video walls, and so much more, making for a visually stunning concert event.
“It’s new and shiny, there’s so much technology,” the three-time ACM Entertainer of the Year shared in a behind-the-scenes clip.
Her high-energy performance, which also featured her band, dancers, aerialists, a virtual orchestra, and a stunning array of one-of-a-kind costumes.
“There’s something glitzy and glamour-ey about women in country music,” Underwood added. “We love our rhinestones, we love our wardrobe changes. We’ve been doing our own version of Vegas in Nashville for generations.”

The show was directed by Barry Lather, with Creative Production & Show design by Nick Whitehouse & Fireplay, and Costume Design/Wardrobe Styling by Emma Trask.
Underwood gave fans a breathtaking finale from a never-before-seen water wall feature, but the biggest highlight of the evening was Underwood’s flawless vocals throughout the duration of the concert.
With stunning visuals, a breathtaking production and Underwood’s powerhouse vocals, REFLECTION: The Las Vegas Residency is surely a force to be reckoned with.
Due to overwhelming demand, six additional shows have been added for May 2022. The new dates are May 11, 13, 14, 18, 20 and 21.

Underwood kicked off her Reflection: The Las Vegas Residency at the brand-new Resorts World Theatre in Las Vegas on Wednesday night (Dec. 1), marking both the start of her first-ever residency and the opening night of the new venue. Underwood played to a capacity crowd at the 5,000-seat, state-of-the-art venue, presenting a show that juxtaposed her catalog of hits from across the last 15 years with dancers, aerialists, a virtual orchestra and more, and the demand for future dates is so high that she has announced an additional run of dates for May of 2022.

I still feel like we are at least getting an new single by ACM time in spring. I think she said in a recent interview that she had been working on it.

I feel like she could definitely do a more of weekend type tour like Miranda has previous done because I think that's why Vegas works so well for her because she isn't away from home but two weeks at a time.

Great write up

Carrie Underwood approaches her residency at the Resorts World Theatre in Las Vegas like a championship-caliber football team might approach the Super Bowl. The tools for greatness already existed before Wednesday night's (Dec. 1) debut; she wouldn't be there if they didn't. But a plan lacking a brilliant concept, relentless preparation, focused teamwork and attention to every dazzling detail would fall short of transformative.

And Underwood's show is transformative.

A team of dancing rhythmic gymnasts first join Underwood and her eight-piece band during "Drinking Alone," but they elevate the show with a hoops exposition during "Blown Away," the bookend for her mid-show death trilogy. Pairs weave arms and legs between floor-to-ceiling tapestries and ascend 20 to 30 feet into the air for a synchronized performance equal parts beautiful and harrowing. Every time their toes touch the stage, the bar raises another notch, but none of it distracts from the vocal performance. The music is never lost.
After what looked like early nerves, Underwood found her breath at the end of "Two Black Cadillacs," holding a note in a way fans selfishly expect her to do on repeat. The rigor of her setlist should not go unappreciated — rangy ballads are followed by more that require even higher, longer runs. There's barely a break for Underwood, though "All-American Girl" may have qualified on this night, as she invited a woman who was celebrating her bachelorette party to the stage to sing along with her. Regina from Las Vegas needed no further encouragement.

On the residency's opening night, "Cowboy Cassanova" began a set that included 21 song titles. Underwood's entrance is special, but by the time she nonchalantly sets a Jeep on fire to finish "Before He Cheats," the quieter early moments of the show are long forgotten. Most country concerts are built like a good mix tape: Early energy gives way to mid-show ballads and conversation before a rousing rush of hits, covers and pyro, if available. Reflection builds more like the Mountain Climber game on The Price Is Right. Sure, "Jesus Take the Wheel" is a chance to sit down, but then she adds a bit of "How Great Thou Art" to close and you're standing in rapture once again. Only the beer vendor left disappointed, as there's just not a chance you'll want to scoot away for a refill.
Several outfit changes allow room for Underwood's well-rehearsed band to show off some more. A cover of Led Zeppelin's "Rock and Roll" is an unexpected highlight of this show, which is scheduled through December with dates in March, April and now May 2022. Drummer Elizabeth Chan could change her name to Joan Bonham and no one would object.

When Underwood returned in a flowing silver skirt and jacket to begin the final few songs, it felt like the kind of fourth quarter surge appropriate for a singer as athletic as she is. In tangible ways, everything the country star has done prior to now — her dramatic songwriting, the dynamic touring rigs, her dedication to exercise and fitness — was for this moment.

The Resorts World Theatre is part of Resorts World Las Vegas, a newly-opened Hilton partnership on the Las Vegas strip. Katy Perry, Celine Dion and Luke Bryan also have residencies scheduled into 2022, but during a tour of the property prior to the show, executives assured Taste of Country and select media that even more experiences will be announced s

Las Vegas Review Journal does a great job of linking elements of Carries show to prior headliners and then going above and beyond! Think the writer musta had a darned good time!

Carrie Underwood causes a splash in Strip residency at Resorts World

By John Katsilometes Las Vegas Review-Journal
December 2, 2021 - 12:15 pm

There is a time to stay dry, and a time to get wet. Carrie Underwood performed a cannonball at the Theater at Resorts World on Wednesday night.
Underwood threw open the 5,000 capacity theater with a leap into the deep end. It happened at the end of the performance, which was peppered with several elements hinting strongly to famous Vegas productions. Underwood performed as her stage rotated toward the crowd, reminding us of the signature stage deck from Cirque’s “Ka.”
Her dance team climbed along giant rods protruding from that stage, as Underwood called out, “There must be something in the water!” Oh yeah. On cue, a waterfall cascaded on the superstar, drenching her, as if providing a cold shower to close a fiery performance.
That would be her finale, too. There is NO encore after the headliner is soaked.
The scene brought to mind not only “Ka” (and also, “O,” whenever you just add water), but also Celine Dion’s gorgeous closing number at the Colosseum at Caesars Palace. A rain curtain that surrounded Dion, but not a drop of water fell upon the legend.

There is more than one way to summon H20 in these Vegas spectacles.
Underwood, of course, was the first to make a splash at the Theater after Dion cancelled all of her dates at the venue for health concerns. The Theater, a partnership between Resorts World and AEG Presents is her domain, for now, until Katy Perry and Luke Bryan blast in.

Underwood is on the Strip for the long run, with five more shows through Dec. 11. She’s back for four in March, two in April and six just announced in May. Those are onsale 10 a.m. Monday (Pacific time).
Underwood was up for the task of opening this venue, seeming to relish the assignment. She came with several costume changes, employing ample bling and a couple capes in the same fashion Elvis and (especially) Liberace made famous in Las Vegas

All of these elements line up with Resorts World’s own attention to Vegas lineage. The hotel sports an Elvis display at its main entrance, and also Liberace’s mirrored-plated Baldwin and 1962 Rolls Royce Phantom. That a headliner in the prime of her career can pay homage, artistically, to those days is refreshing to longtime Vegas entertainment fans.
Underwood happens to hold the same position at the Theater that Barbra Streisand did when she opened the International, months before Elvis premiered there. But Underwood’s was not a performance that broke in the venue. The Theater is in superb condition, in midseason form, to use a sports term. The Theater is beautifully appointed (its very similar to an expanded Colosseum in its design) with clear sight lines and dazzling video at the back of the stage and along the sides.

The furthest seat from the stage is 150 feet, which (in lay terms) is close enough.
The Scéno Plus sound system, with about 200 L-Acoustics speakers, meets the hype. Maybe only the well-trained ear can detect if it is more refined than, say, the Colosseum or Dolby Live. But you feel every note, a full and robust audio experience that doesn’t leave your ears ringing.

Underwood’s is a dance-and-acrobatic production, too. Her backing performers frequently performed acrobatically on lyra hoops, aerial straps, other elements that are, by today’s standards, classic Vegas. Underwood, herself, is in top stage condition. She took on the look of a superhero in her gold-sequined pant suit and black cape. You would have expected her to perform an aerial act herself across the stage.
But at the core this is a music show, and Underwood has that fantastic voice. She establishes a spiritual connection with her fans by blowing through “Jesus Take The Wheel,” “Drinking Alone,” “Last Name” and lyrically, it sometimes seems as if George Jones (or George Thorogood) is inhabiting Underwood’s thought process. “Drinking Alone” has the bar-top exchange, “We should be drinkin’ alone, together. Drownin’ the pain is better.”

And during band intros, Underwood summoned Led Zeppelin’s “Rock and Roll.” Not just a couple of riffs or a verse, but nearly the entire song. You need a dose of Led Zep in today’s country residency, even during the NFR, just to shake things up. You also need the right band to pull this off, and Underwood’s killed it.

And the country icon has conceived a show-within-a-show with her “Before He Cheats.” This is the anthemic, confessional tribute to retribution through vandalism. This might be the least-ambiguous song ever recorded. Underwood sings, “I took a Louisville slugger to both headlights. I slashed a hole in all four tires.” Following her phrasing, Underwood’s dance team wields prop bats at a Jeep that has been lowered to the stage.
It’s a slam-bang number — Get the license-plate number of that cheater! — that has the crowd wailing approval. The last time we saw a Louisville Slugger on a Vegas stage was when John Fogerty played his famous bat-guitar during “Centerfield.” A totally different vibe.
The Theater will host many more headliners (including another likely to be announced this month). There will be moments to remember, sing-alongs, and swaying arms and smartphones lighting up the venue. But there’s only one chance to open a place like this. And with Underwood, the Theater got it right

To me it's very interesting that she keeps Smoke Break in her setlists. I feel like it's a song she personally really loves to showcase. She could have easily added another song from her catalogue that is more recognizable. So I like how she is able to exercise that agency and control to make that decision.

I was also expecting CCA in the setlist for some reason. Think it would have made for an amazing performance. But I guess it would have been odd singing about Choctaw in Vegas.

I miss CCA too. I really like the song and think it could have added another flavor to the set list but overall I think the set list is pretty spectacular

I do to, but I have always been one that really liked that song and the video... So I'm glad that she does keep it in..
