Women in Country Music

Interestingly, Barbara Mandrell's signature hit "Sleeping Single in a Double Bed" has been remixed by renowned DJ Dave Aude. I actually do not mind this at all. As a dance track, I enjoy it and I'm hoping this gives Barbara Mandrell some attention. I feel like she is often ignored when the female greats of country music are listed. She also gave Rolling Stone a rare interview and has mentioned that her music is going to be released on streaming services.

Here, we have Courtney Marie Andrews' new single. I like the incorporation of a little choreography in her video. Many probably don't think that country and choreography go together but, if done right, I think it can work very well.

#4 Gwen Stefani (with Blake Shelton) - "Nobody But You"
#6 Carly Pearce and Lee Brice - "I Hope You're Happy Now"
#10 Carrie Underwood - "Drinking Alone"
#11 Miranda Lambert - "Bluebird"
#17 Maddie & Tae - "Die From a Broken Heart"

*NEW* Tenille Arts - "Somebody Like That"

Notes and personal observations:
- Gabby, Gwen and Ingrid all hit #1 in previous weeks.
- M&T, Ashley McBryde seem to have a hit on their hands (I can see them reaching the Top 10 easily); Carly will probably hit #1
- RJ, with the departure of Hannah from the group, see their single falling now (which is sad because it was a great song)
- Gone West have been hanging on for many many weeks. I think it might remain on the chart for a few more weeks but probably won't go beyond #20
- Miranda will most likely hit #1 with "Bluebird". It's gained high praise from fans, critics and peers alike.

- Gone West is surprisingly still hanging on and climbing up. Curious to see how far it goes.

Some more new music:

1. Cam - "Redwood Tree"

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=obBgq4TsUcs

Cam has released the second single from her album. I've only heard it once. I like the lyrical content but don't feel enthusiastic about it. I liked her previous single better. Maybe I need to give it more listens to judge better.

2. Dolly Parton - "When Life is Good Again"

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zEUYlo6OoDY

This is meant to be a song about the current situation in the world and for me, anything that Dolly touches turns to gold. Her heartfelt, soft delivery will never get old even if she does! She has kept up a social media presence during quarantine, offering words of wisdom, humour and inspiration. So it makes natural sense for her to do the same through song. The song is about being more grateful about life, friendships and what we should do once things go back to normal. I like the production choices made in this song. I don't know the name of that instrument but it's a very distinct string (maybe the mandolin).

3. Lindsay Ell - "I Don't Love You"

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0K-G0ig1p0g

This is a little old but I just listened to this. It's a good song and a good vocal showcase for Lindsay Ell. I think it has the potential to be more successful for her than "Criminal".

Absolutely love Dolly’s new song!! I loved it as soon as it started playing. I feel the same way about Cam’s new single. It doesn’t grab me too much!

Just came to post about Dolly's new song. If you have not heard it, please listen to it. It was so moving to me and really was the only celebrity tribute of any kind to the virus that meant something for me.

For a while, I've been full of anxiety and sadness about this whole thing, wondering if life will ever get "good again", and hearing this song, it was like all my worries went away.

I truly believe it could do the same for anyone. It's so well written, meaningful, and it's like a hot bath on a cold night in this "long dark night".

Please listen! <3

This is the type of stuff that radio should be playing.

Agree! While I love Reba, Keith, and Hilary Scott, "Be a Light" which was supposedly written by T. Rhett in response to the virus, I don't think that song really has anything to do with the virus. But it's still doing really well. It would be so nice to see this do well on radio for Dolly. Everyone needs to hear it.

I just heard Tenille Townes' debut album The Lemonade Stand. I don't think I've felt this passionate and touched by an album in quite a while. Her songwriting is excellent and I really like her raw voice. More observations:

- The album overall is very cohesively produced.
- I find some production choices very similar to Miranda's 'Wildcard' (both albums are produced by Jay Joyce). Also to those on Carrie's "Smoke Break".
- Jersey on the Wall and When I Meet My Maker, to me, are two sides of the same coin.
- The upbeat, more radio-friendly songs don't feel forced. I would prefer them over anything upbeat and party-esque on country radio right now. They remain true to a country sound.
- Overall, I felt like there's an air-yness to the production on the album. At the risk of sounding a little flowery, it feels like a breeze. There's an openness to it and the different production elements are given room to breathe, as well as Tenille's own voice.

Some standout favourites:
- Where You Are
- Jersey on the Wall
- When I Meet My Maker
- I Kept the Roses
- The Most Beautiful Things

The IBMA have announced their annual award nominations.

Something of a landmark - an all female band have been nominated for Entertainer of the Year. They are Sister Sadie (a band which includes 5 times Female Artist winner, Dale Ann Bradley, and fiddler Deanie Richardson, whom some of you may have seen performing with Patty Loveless.

In this video, from about four years ago, I think it's Tina Adair who is singing lead and playing mandolin, on the technically difficult classic "Molly and Tenbrooks"

I wish mainstream country could take a cue from this and start giving groups like Maddie & Tae and Runaway June more recognition. Currently The Highwomen are being given a lot of prominence (deservedly so).

Cassadee Pop has been releasing new music with lyric videos that feature her singing with an acoustic guitar. I prefer this style of music from her than most of her recent work which was quite bland for my taste. These kind of videos give her voice more room to breathe and shine as well as give the song a more rooted feel.
