Murder of British politician

Jo Cox, who represented the Yorkshire towns of Batley and Spen in the UK Parliament, has been killed in a violent attack by one assailant, outside a library, where she had been meeting with local constituents in one of her regular sessions to discuss issues they wanted to raise.
A male suspect in his 50s was later arrested nearby, but any previous link to Mrs Cox is unknown.

The attack resulted in three gunshot wounds and multiple stab wounds. Mrs Cox was rushed to hospital, but did not survive.

She leaves a husband and two young children, and they nave been described as a loving family, who lived in a converted barge on the Thames when she was attending Parliamentary sessions in London. A representative of the Labour Party (the current opposition party), she is said to be the first British politician to be murdered in office for at least 25 years.

Reports suggest that the suspect uttered the words "Britain First" several times during the attack, and this suggestion of a possible political motivation will be part of the investigation - though it is too early to form any conclusions.
Mrs Cox had only been elected a year ago. She has worked for the international famine relief organization, Oxfam, and has been an advocate for Syrian refugees, also suggesting that the UK could play a military peacekeeping role in the region. She has been part of the campaign to stay a member state of the European Union, which will be the subject of a referendum next week.
It is not known if any of these issues were specifically connected with the suspect's alleged words - but the referendum campaigning has been temporally suspended by both sides as a mark of respect.
