Partition of California: Is it possible?

California had been ruled by the Spanish Empire and Mexico as part of Alta California before it was annexed by the USA in 1848 in the presidential term of James Knox Polk. It was admitted to the union as the 31st state on September 9th, 1950 in the presidential term of Millard Fillmore.

Nowadays California is the most populous US state. It is a very developed state as well.

There are a lot of proposals to create new states separate from California but none of them is done.

Can California be divided into smaller states someday? Can a northern part of California and a southern part of Oregon form a new state together?

Not if anybody in government has any say. I live in Nor Cal and wouldn't mind if we were separate from So Cal. But both ends need each other for different reasons. But I know that those that run the state will not allow it to be separate.
