After Mali President Amadou Toumani Touré was deposed in the 2012 Malian coup d'état, the situation in this country is very complicated
As the result of a rebellion of the local Tuareg people, the Independent State of Azawad (دولة أزواد المستقلة ) was declared independence from the Republic of Mali on April 6th, 2012. This is the newest independent state in the world without being recognized by any UN member. This declaration is opposed by the international community.
The unrecognized Western African state consists of 3 northernmost regions of Mali in the Sahara and its area is about 819,928 km2 (Mali's whole area is about 1,240,000 km2). Its proclaimed capital is Timbuktu (aka Tombouctou).
Azawad's population is about 1.3 million people (Mali's whole population is about 14.5 million). Almost all Azawadi people adhere to Islam.

There are 2 UNESCO World Heritage Sites in Azawad (the whole Mali has 4 sites)
+ The Tomb of Askia
+ Timbuktu
