Weekly Album Sales, Blown Away, Week 22

Mumford & Sons explode onto the chart next week with the second largest indie debut ever. Only The Eagles' 2007 Walmart exclusive, Long Road Out of Eden, scored a larger first week with 711k. Mumford will also hold the honor of this year's biggest debut, at least until Taylor Swift (10/22) and One Direction (11/13) hit the streets, both of which are expected to sell north of 600k. Mumford's total digital sales should exceed 400k, making it the second-largest first-week behind only Lady Gaga, whose 662k included 400k+ sales from Amazon MP3 at 99 cents. Here's how it looks headed into the weekend:

*Mumford & Sons Babel (Glassnote) 585-615k
*Green Day (Reprise) 150-170k
*No Doubt (Interscope) 120-125k
P!nk (RCA) 95-105k
*Lupe Fiasco (Atlantic) 85-90k
G.O.O.D. Music Cruel Summer (G.O.O.D./Def Jam/IDJ) 65-70k
*deadmau5 (Ultra) 55-60k
Dave Matthews Band (RCA) 40-45k
The Killers (Island/IDJ) 35-40k
Little Big Town (Capitol Nashville/EMI) 30-35k
Mumford & Sons Sigh No More (Glassnote) 27-30k
Avett Brothers (American/Republic) 24-27k
*As I Lay Dying (Metal Blade) 24-27k
Adele (XL/Columbia) 21-24k
Bob Dylan (Columbia) 21-24k
*Debuts (9/27p)

One Direction is going to sell over 600k first week? lol?

Wow. One Direction is on fire. At least they are talented though. Simon Cowell will be thrilled. :)

Good maybe the teen girls will defect to them instead of SWSRN. lol

Hey-- is that a normal reporting update? I hope she is above 13k. I figured this week would be slow in sales as she was not really on tv last week except for the kiss thing. lol

It is so weird. They are selling tickets for a show NEXT YEAR here in SLC. Teen girls are seriously into this group.

The thing about 1 Direction is that they're really putting out some catchy music so instead of just getting tweens buying their stuff and buying tickets, they're getting legitimate radio airplay.

Check out the iTunes Popularity Bars. It will put a smile on your face. Tomorrow will be interesting to see how 1D holds up as Taylor's 3rd song is released.

Regarding the HITS chart, it looks country heavy to me in this first report.

I was thinking it was country heavy too. I'd be okay with Carrie popping back into the top 20, but I don't expect it.

I'm one who is thrilled 1 Direction is doing so great - mainly because they are talented, cute and love their songs!!! Great performers too!!!

Il Divo was popular for a brief amount of time, but they were never really that big and they've faded away fairly quickly - Even Leona Lewis would be a better substitution, who is not even around anymore.

People were also predicting big numbers like 600k or even more for Justin Bieber and Katy Perry. It turns out the former opened with less than 400k copies and the latter less than 200k copies. That's just merely a sales prediction, it'd be really difficult for an act whose first album barely crossed a million copies to open with 0.6 million copies. Not saying it's impossible, but it's highly likely to be an overestimation. In contrast, we have a long list of disappointments this year: Bieber, Usher, Chris Brown, Lana Del Rey, Carly Rae Jespen, etc. This is coming from an One Direction fan (I bought their debut album actually).

Their lead single is looking to be selling more than Taylor Swift's "Begin Again" for sure - it has put the #2 song down to around 0.3 now and could go further; while Swift 'only' managed to push the same #2-selling song to around 0.45 in her peak. But I think Britney Spears' "Hold It Against Me" sold 4 times more than the #2 song at one point (411k copies in the end) with Avril Lavigne and Kanye West / Jay-Z as her main competitors; while Lady GaGa's "Born This Way" got up to 6 to 8 times (448k in the end, in only 3 days), which also holds the record for fastest climb to #1 on iTunes, with slightly more than 3 hours. The next Swift's song is not even a proper single so it should sell way weaker than BA - It'd be only the second time in recent memory for a Swift's single to not hit #1 on iTunes, the other one being "Eyes Open". I'm not counting "Ours" which peaked at #2 because the #1 song that blocked her was herself.

Il Divo did not fade out, they released a new album last year and now they are on tour. I saw them in May in New York City and all three nights were sell outs.

To date, they have sold more than 26 million albums worldwide but I will admit they are more popular overseas.

I saw Il Divo with Barbra Streisand a few years ago.Wasn't overly impressed.
Could have been the sound mix,but their voices just didn't meld together well.

Il Divo is not for everyone, they are a pop opera group; they also went on tour with Barbra Streisand.

Never heard of II Divo, but yesterday was the 50th anniversary of Barbra Streisand signing her first record deal - Made me feel soooo old. .
