Steven Tyler Quits 'American Idol'

Steven Tyler is leaving "American Idol" after a two-season run as judge, Fox announced today (July 12).

"After some long, hard thoughts, I've decided it's time for me to let go of my mistress 'American Idol' before she boils my rabbit," Tyler, who judged seasons 10 and 11 of the reality show, said in a statement. "I strayed from my first love, Aerosmith, and I'm back -- but instead of begging on my hands and knees, I've got two fists in the air and I'm kicking the door open with my band. ... The next few years are going to be dedicated to kicking some serious ass."

Mike Darnell, president of alternative entertainment at Fox, said that it has been a "tremendous honor" to have Steven on the show. "We are very sad that Steven has chosen to focus more on his music," said Darnell, "but we always knew when we hired a rock 'n' roll legend, he would go back to the music." He added that they would love to see Tyler back on the show in the future.

Fox has yet to make an announcement regarding the futures of the other "Idol" judges, Jennifer Lopez and Randy Jackson, both of whom are still reportedly in contract negotiations.

^ My favorite Doors song! :D

I for one am glad Steven's out of there. He was too good for the show. Though I'll miss watching the auditions and seeing him hit on fifteen-year-old girls.

This isn't surprising. I would imagine we will be getting notice of Jennifer's departure soon as well. With all the rumors, it appears that Idol is looking to create a new vibe with the judging panel. I wonder if Randy will stay because apparently his contract was up at the end of the season. I honestly hope he moves on as well. Let's just start fresh.

why doesn't IDOL start with people who aren't giant stars to begin with? Idol practically made Simon's career, same with Randy and Paula (or at least restarted hers). yes, they all had careers before idol that were very important in the business but they became stars from idol. the judges should NOT be the stars though to begin with. it should be about the contestants. plus, people who aren't already famous would be less afraid to give criticism.

Some would say it the other way around. Simon made Idol. He was big doing the show already in Britain. Had Simon not been on Idol, I don't think the show would have made it.

Yes, the judges need to be people that are important in the business, have experienced the business, and be helpful to the contestants for the (music/entertainment) business. Some of the names that have been mentioned in the press are just ridiculous ... probably just to create buzz.

And yes, amen to that American Idol should be all about the contestants.

I really hope they do away with the whole group and start again.
I watch SYTYCD and it is amazing what a difference it makes when the judges are honest and educated in what they are talking about.
It makes all the difference.
Idol has not been that for a long time.
No one knows how to talk about singing or performance in any educated way.
Hopefully this will bring about sweeping change.
I will kind of miss him though. He was a goof who spoke from the heart.

I am with you that it wasn't a surprise at all.

It really doesn't matter who the judges are because it will be the same old song & dance with the fans of the show if their favorite contestant doesn't get their ass kiss even though they don't deserve it and there are always fans of other contestants who don't like when whoever gets praised every though they deserve it.

I grew to respect Steven immensely through Idol. He just seemed completely genuine, and I felt like he cared about each contestant a lot. I secretly hoped he would improve in terms of giving constructive criticism.

But it only seemed to become more obvious that he really wasn't cut out for the job. That kind of thing isn't for everybody, but I gotta give him credit for trying. This whole fiasco with Jennifer and Steven really goes to show just because you have experience as an entertainer doesn't automatically make you a great fit for a show like Idol.

I respect both for trying, but it seems like Idol thinks the bigger the star, the better the judge, just because of the experience factor. The contestants might think the celebrity factor is cool at first, but what good are they if they don't offer anything? At the end of the day, these kids are amateurs who can use all the help they can get.

I'm really hoping all 3 judges are let go and they start fresh. I didn't used to care about the judges as much, but this whole thing caused me to realize chemistry is important. The last thing Idol needs is another egomainiac like Kara, or another season of "That was pitchy, Dawg!'

I'm in agreement that the best option would be a panel of unknowns, but Idol is all about ego now. I miss when the show used to be as real as the contestants themselves.

I think that she would do a good job too, but once she didn't overpraise whatever contestant that person's fan base would start their crying.

PINK would be awesome as a judge and she's a big girl and can take care of herself using the wrath of twitter on that person's fan base. lol!

I love Stephen, but not as a judge. One down, two to go. :)
