It's Been a Few Months, Is Blown Away Still Carrie's Best Work?

Well, we're just past the 3 month mark since the release of BA, and the newness (for me at least) has worn off. What is everyone thinking? Is this still Carrie's best album, yet?

My opinion: Yes, it wasn't going to be hard to beat PO, but CR, (my previous favorite Carrie album) places second to the masterpiece that is "Blown Away"!

Thoughts?

Yes. Absolutely. Some Hearts had the big UBER hits, but Carnival Ride was the best all around album until BA.

I still think PO was under-rated and had some amazing songs--- but the weak singles choices at the end kind of killed its momentum. Had better singles been released off PO, as well as a 5th single, it could have done better.

but BA is the most innovative and exciting album Carrie has done yet. She took alot of risks-- even going reggae--- and I think they paid off.

To me, Blown Away is hands down the best Carrie Underwood album so far.

Blown Away gave me my favorite Carrie Underwood BALLAD: Wine After Whiskey
Blown Away gave me my favorite Carrie Underwood UP-TEMPO song: Good Girl
Blown Away gave me my ALL-TIME favorite Carrie Underwood song: Blown Away/Two Black Cadillacs (I'm sorry, but this is too hard to choose)

It also gave me my least-favorite Carrie Underwood song though: Nobody Ever Told You

Those songs take the #1 and #2 spots for my all-time favorites EVER.

Day to day they switch spots, lol.

I do still believe BA is Carrie's best album, despite a few small missteps (NETY, TGFH). BA is her most innovative album, without a doubt, and a true showcase of her artistry. It shows immense growth as both a singer and songwriter.

CR is a very close second for me, but I think BA just edges it out.

BA, PO, SH, CR

BA has all the songs that I wanted... except for a good inspirational/spiritual song... WAY didn't compare to JTTW, SS and TH..
but. . .
Best boy-hate song is GG
Best ballad goes to WAW
Best happy upbeat song OWT
Best laid back/chill song DYTAM

I think so. My second favourite album is a toss up between Carnival Ride and Play On.

Each album has their gems, it's just Blown Away has more of them. BA, TBC, DYTAM, GIG, WAW are all amazing songs (that hopefully see the light of day to be singles).

I absolutely LOVE CR because it gave us so many Carrie songs that will last forever (AAG, LN, IKYW, FOTF, ITYS etc etc etc); however, I think BA has done the same thing so what puts it over the top for me is the INCREDIBLE production on BA and the fact that her singing has truly gotten better just because she's more experience (and I don't think in terms of big notes, I mean it terms of emotion and phrasing etc). don't get me wrong, she sang the hell out of CR, but her vocals seem to be a lot more of the forefront on BA and less about the production. I actually like listening to a lot of her CR songs live than on the album.

I think Blown Away is definitely her best album. For me though Play On produced a couple of individual songs that I like better than anything. Temporary Home is my absolute favorite of all of her songs.

I think what tweaks BA into the top slot is not the number of songs that everyone loves. I think it is the fact that for the first time her album is not all about her powerful voice. I love her power ballads so much, but what stands out for me is the control and emotion she manages to bring. She has always had the voice and good control, but his time we can hear it because every song is not overproduced. I know Carrie remains fully in charge of the production of her albums. The fact that there is more subtlety to this one is a definate indicator of her growth and confidence. Carrie's album's always remain different from her live performances, not for the usual reasons, but because she manages to change up the songs and bring a little more each time she performs. I think in Carrie's mind she feels a big song like BA needs all of the dramatic production, she is right in that the video is spectacular. However I find I enjoy her subtle nuances and different tweaks more each time she sings. I have issues on the live performances occasionally with Jamie being too loud for the song, on such occasions she detracts from the song As far as Carrie's performances. each time it is performed, you think you have heard the ultimate best......until you hear her sing again and once more Carrie bests herself. All of that aside, as much as I enjoyed CR, i found myself having to adjust volume all the time as it was over the top loud the whole way through and I am hard of hearing. Loved each and every song, but enjoyed listening to the songs individually on the radio more because of the volume issue.

BA is Carrie's most innovative album, and I think that gives it the edge. Plus, the production is stellar, the vocals are outstanding, and it truly shows Carrie's growth as an artist and person. I also like that's a lot of variety, too.

While I think SH had the best songs, I love the other three because Carrie has gotten so comfortable with opening up and using her albums/songwriting to express who she is. While there were some mistepps with all 4 albums, Carrie has shown tremendous growth and pride in her work and that is what I like to see.

Ultimate the journey is Carrie's, and she appears to be making the most of it. At the end of the day, I have tremendous respect for Carrie and the way she has handled both herself and her career. As long as she continues to progress and believe in what she's doing I'll support her.

I don't think there were any missteps on the first two albums. I like every song off of those (not counting IYH because it was a bonus track). PO had Unapologize and Play On, and BA has TGFH.

I don't see TGFH as a misstep - it's grown in stature and affection for me with repeat listens. I think the "home town" theme is significant for Carrie - and probably for quite a few of her listeners in the Country community (both those who've directly experienced the home town ethos themselves, and those who are city and suburb dwellers with a nostalgic identification with an imagined rural idyll (the latter group making up a significant and growing part of the radio audience). However, the theme in TGFH can work two ways - there are also people for whom the home town ethos has no resonance at all, or sometimes a negative resonance (a stifling memory of conformity and petty preoccupation with other people's business.) Hence it's potentially a divisive theme, that will work for some listeners and not others. I think it's a suitable song, though, for an album in which Carrie has sensibly tried to mix innovative and adventurous songs with a range of songs that span the potential range of her listeners, across the contemporary Country and not-so-Country spectrum.

And that, I think, is one of the strengths of this album. We have songs like GG and FC that take Carrie vocally into very different, but equally remarkable, challenges even she probably wasn't sure she could triumph in. We have a strongly symbolic and elemental survival-from-abuse song, and a broodingly powerful Gothic murder ballad. We have songs that address different facets of the Country spectrum (the Roots stomp that drives LLA, the great Country Rock feel of CGAS, the neo-traditional WAW - and, even though it's far from my favourite, the "Margaritaville" sound of OWT). I think it's into that spectrum that the nostalgia of TGFH fits - and, lyrically, it's a very good example of its type.

There is, in fact, only one song that I find disappointing - SYA (which, if it was anyone but Carrie, I'd never listen to again.). That personal judgment, by the way, has nothing to do with the lyric - which is an inspiring message - but everything to do with the musical style, which I find very unappealing. That, though, is neither here nor there. I still support its inclusion, and don't regard it as a misstep, because it has appeal for another part of Carrie's listener spectrum, and therefore justifies its place on a very varied album.

So my overall verdict is that this album has stood up to expectations and has grown in interest, and in the discovery of more detail and points to admire with repeat listening. For me it is her strongest studio album yet (a feeling I never had when PO came out, despite my love of SWISLY and SLT as individual tracks)

^TGFH for me is a misstep. It's the only song on the album that I skip almost every time it comes up - it just does nothing for me, so that's why I consider it a misstep. I can see why others connect to it, though. I just personally don't. I don't connect much with WAY either, but I like that one a bit better.

I do agree that every song on the album has its place and is there for a reason.

This. TGFH is the only song on the album I have problems remembering even right after I listen to it, and even though I like the lyrics, I don't connect with them at all. And unlike Unapologize and PO, I actually never feel a thing about it. At least with those other songs, I feel intense dislike. I get zero emotions from TGFH. I do love her phrasing on the third verse, if I'm remembering how it goes correctly. But I'm really stretching myself right now with these compliments.

Regarding WAY, I only connect with the lyrics when I imagine it as more of a relationship song than a relationship-with-God song. If I imagined it as the latter, it would actually really annoy me. And I like the melody.
