^ Thank goodness for SNF to beat out the SOM hate tweets. haha

Do you think Carrie will do SNF next year too? Faith did it like 5 years right? but Pink only did it 1 year. I hope Carrie does it for several years.

I am 99.999% sure that Carrie will do SNF again.

Since the SNF producers said they wanted Carrie to sing the theme song for years, I'm betting she's a lock for a long time.

I think that is her gig for as long she wants it.

I am watching the SOM movie tonight on ABC - not sure why on ABC since I have the DVD without commercials lol. It is interesting how people out there just want to compare the two Marias. I find myself more comparing the other characters (can't believe I am since I thought it was unfair to compare the two Marias) now that I am watching the movie again after seeing Carrie's version of SOML I like the children in SOML much more than the movie - seem to have much more personality and talent in the SOML version - and this is coming from someone who always loved the movie.

^ Agree! I loved the original Liesel-- but I kind of love the new Liesel even more as she (Ariane Rinehart) is such a funny, witty pistol. Perhaps it is getting to know them all on twitter and behind the scenes stuff that is helping. haha But I do agree with you that the new VonTrapp kids are more likeable somehow, then the old ones. Yet I love the original cast as well.

I bet I will do the same thing- compare the new cast to the old cast- when I next watch SOM (movie version). lol It is probably inevitable to do that, right? (smile)

I watched just the clip of "Something Good" today on youtube-- and I have to say- Carrie is simply flawless in that scene. I don't care what the critics say. She has moments of true brilliance in this. Sure, she had a few weaker parts but overall she really was endearing and she did very well.

She will never be Julie Andrews- but who cares?? The haters need to get over that. There have been 100s of Marias since Julie- and Carrie is just another Maria of many. The hate she got was absolutely ridiculous and undeserved.

I truly think that a no name Broadway star would have gotten hate too, but no one would have watched or cared. so....lol

Anne Hathaway would have gotten massive hate too. So would have Amanda Seyfried or Emma Rossum or any other young singer/actress who got picked for the role. Each has strengths-- either singing or acting- but no one has perfected both singing AND acting. Julie is the only one who somehow perfected both. So Carrie did as well as any of the other choices out there would have done: she nailed the singing, and was decent on the acting. Anne would have nailed the acting but been only decent on the singing. Emma and Amanda are fantastic singers- but only decent actors. So no one would have been perfect, and all would get hate.

I actually like Ariane better also because she passes for that age better to me. I always thought that the Liesel back then and the Rolfe looked so much older their parts. All the kids in SOML were so charismatic and likeable. Now, I am not going to lie, I do think I like Christopher a tiny bit better as the Captain for exactly the reason Mirasa says but doesn't mean Stephen was bad at all - because no one in either production was bad. Christopher just captured that character so well to me. Every person in each of the two productions did well though, including Carrie!! So with all the talk about Carrie, I thought Carrie was much more warm and endearing then even the more experienced Stephen was :). I thought when I watched Carrie, you could not help but like her because she was just so likeable and loveable too lol.

(And yes Tee now that I watched the SOM movie again tonight, I couldn't help myself from comparing now. It wasn't until I watched the movie after SOML tonight that I started doing that).

^ Yes agree. Christopher Plummer was a fantastic Captain. He is such a fantastic actor! But I did think Stephen did a good job too and did not deserve the harsh criticism he got along with Carrie. He was a bit more reserved and not very warm- but he was good overall.

Yes Liesel in particular looked about 25 to me in the original SOM movie. lol I wonder how old she was?

But even Julie Andrews looked much older than 30 to me, in the movie, but that was her real age at the time. She was the exact age that Carrie is now as Maria.....yet Carrie looked vastly younger then Julie did somehow. Many people on twitter kept saying that Carrie is too young for the role of Maria....yet ironically, she is the same exact age that Julie was when she was Maria. So clearly, they thought Julie was older too. Odd. Perhaps it is just that in those days, people aged faster or something? Today, 30 is like 20. lol

I actually did not know Stephen got any criticism besides that one article and it was minor so that is interesting. Well, no one was bad in either, including Stephen, as I said and actually I had not even thought of the Christopher/Stephen comparison until I saw the movie again tonight. And you refer back to hate and that is not what i am talking about because i don't look at the hate - I was more just referring i guess to constructive comparisons. I guess that is why I found myself comparing because Carrie got all this criticism and now I see that people could have rightfully compared many of the other characters also but chose to mainly only compare the two Marias. I feel bad even comparing now because I was so upset that people compared Julie and Carrie and because all did so well in both productions and all deserve recognition - especially those in the live version because of the enormity of the task they had.

Not sure how old the girl playing Liesel was but I read the guy playing Rolfe was getting ready to turn 30 when he filmed that.

EDIT: I looked it up and the girl playing Liesel was born in 1942 and this movie came out in 1965 so she was younger then I thought she was - about 23. And yes, I did think Carrie came off much younger also as you said. And well Carrie could not be too young to play her even if she had been younger then she is because Maria and the Capt actually married when Maria was about 21-22 so they had to have met when she was even younger then that.

EDIT 2 lol: And I now see that this lady that said the guy playing Rolfe in the movie was 30 is wrong because IMDB says he was born in 1943 so he must have only been about 22. A theater person said he was getting ready to turn 30??!! (And well he looked 30 rofl).

There are a lot of little details you could miss if you don't watch closely. Watch the reactions of the kids as Carrie gives the whistle back to the Stephen. Or watch the reactions from Carrie and the kids when Stephen starts singing SOM. Or the fact that when Maria arrives at the Von Trapp home the first time, the maid walks right by her without helping her with her coat. But when the Captain and Maria return from their honeymoon, you see Carrie in the background standing in the same spot with the maid helping her with her coat. An indication of her change in status from the beginning of the play and the end.

I watched again MY "DVD" and focused ALSO on the reactions of Carrie and the children when Stephen OPENED the DOOR and started singing "The Sound of Music" and then hug his children - "MORE" TEARS ARE FLOWING THROUGH MY EYES.

For some reason, tears are also flowing through my eyes DURING "THE PROCESSION: THE WEDDING" with the FOUR NUNS including Mother Abbes are behind Carrie.

Yes there is a lot going on in the background when Stephen is singing SOM, But you have to watch carefully. The obvious ones are Marta and Briggetta hugging and Friedrich putting his arm around Liesl. Also the change in Carrie expression when Stephen starts singing. But did you notice Friedrich is near tears and Louisa and Friedrich hold hands just before the big family hug. There was just so much going on without any dialog in that scene.

Yes. I noticed all those things. That is the reason why - "MORE" TEARS ARE FLOWING THROUGH MY EYES.

I watched the film version tonight for the first time in years. Julie played such a different type Maria than Carrie. I hadn't remembered that big a difference. Maybe it's because I'm so invested in Carrie...but I get teary in so many places in her version. I never felt like shedding a tear tonight in watching the film. The warmth of Carrie is so predominate.....and I love the relationship of Carrie and the Mother Superior so much more in LIVE! Still love Julie...and the film....but CArrie's just gets to me!!

Carrie's Maria has a vulnerability that Julie's Maria does not have. In some cases, I think they made Julie's Maria too strong. Because of that for example, the Climb Ev'ry Mountain scene in the movie has almost no emotional impact at all. But with Carrie's emotional Maria and Audra's strong and motherly portrayal of Mother Abbess, the same scene in SOML has a huge emotion impact.
