2021 CMA Awards

I didn’t think Carrie would win, but I’m still bummed.

2019 was her year, losing that year drove the message that it will always be a steeper climb for her (and Miranda) to win this award. Now, Combs stands to win multiple times this decade, Stapleton officially joins the snubbed/overdue EOTY group, and plenty of new artists will become competitive as the years go by. Then, of course, there’s the A-listers who always stand a chance (Shelton, Chesney, Church, Urban, Rhett, etc).

I don’t think the door is shut for Miranda or Carrie, but each year that passes diminishes either of their chances. Still, I think both will remain the sole two female EOTY contenders for a few years to come - as I don’t see any of the newer ladies splashing big enough to make the cut.

I remain hopeful, but realistic.

So glad I didn't add to the view count! I knew this sack of voters wouldn't allow a win in the biggest category. Nothing changes with this same group voting every year. I haven't seen any you tube videos of the opening monologue and would rather not. I HAVE seen the beautiful pics of Carrie and Mike on the red carpet. She outshines them all in class, voice and beauty!

As I watched Luke Combs give his Entertainer of the Year speech, I was struck again by the clear double standard for women in country music (and society in general). Luke was a mess - literally and figuratively. I've heard better speeches at a high school homecoming dance. I consider Entertainer of the Year as the recognition of country music's ambassador - who they feel represents them best. I continue to be struck by how much more a woman has to be prepared for every encounter than the traditional boy's club. Hair, makeup, wardrobe, vocal performance, personality, facial expressions - all of it has to be flawless. They have to want it, but not too much, and be gracious in defeat. All of it is scrutinized. And then they call a man's name, he scratches his crotch and spits to the side, and looks like he just rolled out of bed after an all-night kegger. Ridiculously embarrassing.

I would never say Carrie has no more chances.... The beauty of it all is Carrie will remain the Queen for a long long time.... The question is will the newer ladies coming onto the scene have the career like Carrie...

Imagine Reba held that for a long time then came Carrie.... And we see how their careers emulate one another.... Amazing the awards these ladies have won through the years and never won EOTY from this sexist group.... Go figure..

That she does.... Imagine you have ones that can sing, but then you have Carrie in a class of her own.....

I watched the performance of IIDLY this morning. I have some thoughts about Aldean.

Firstly, he started off nervous. You heard it in his vocals, saw it in his posture, and it didn’t bring the listener in as he does on the record (the difference between a recorded vocal and a live vocal).

Secondly, he made me feel sorry for him. His face we beat red (could have been the stage make-up). As I watched him perform, his red face, strained vocals, and overall stage presence seemed forced (as evidenced by his relief at the end of the song).

Lastly, I really think what could have helped this song is if there was a little more creativity in the performance. He could have tried sitting at that broken piano (allowing him to feel more relaxed). Carrie did a phenomenal job (no surprise there), but she could have walked from one side of the stage to where he was sitting. Think back to how Carrie and John filmed the video for “Hallelujah”. I just think some slight tweaks to blocking on stage and cinematic lighting effects could have done wonders.

I agree. The staging seemed awkward and there was very little interaction between them.

Carrie's performance was great but Aldean was just ok for me. I honestly don't see his appeal as a live performer. I enjoy some of his recorded stuff but live he's very blah. I am glad the song is doing well and they'll get the promo at the AMA.

Oh. Someone on pulse lied to me then 😶
I think I saw that post, they were talking since 1987, the year after Reba won.

The numbers are stark and confusing when breaking it up though from 1967-1986 women won 5 out of 20 times, not great, in the 35 years since women have only won 4 times, much worse. How can country music be becoming more sexist as time rolls on? The fanbase is not, so there's really no real reason.

For reference all female winners of EOTY:
Loretta Lynn- 1972
Dolly Parton- 1978
Barbara Mandrell- 1980, 1981
Reba McEntire- 1986
Shania Twain- 1999
Dixie Chicks- 2000
Taylor Swift- 2009, 2011

Between 1978-1981 women won 3 out of 4 times!
2 wins in the 1970s
3 wins in the 1980s
1 win in the 1990s
2 wins in the 2000s
1 win in the 2010s.

The trend is going the wrong way.

This is mostly a rhetorical question, but do you think the voters have any sense of how sexist the awards were last night? If you take away the Female artist, not 1 female won an award. Kelsea won with Kenny but that's the only other female to win last night.

I think Carrie & Miranda will still get nominated in the future because if they aren’t then the CMAs will get backlash for no women in the category.
The only other woman that could get nominated is Maren, but she never makes it past the first round of voting.

I hate to say it but the only possible way one of them could win us if only one is in the running, even though that didn't help in 2019. After the backlash from that year Carrie might have had a shot if she were the only option for the 'it's way past damn time a woman wins this thing' vote.

how can we expect her to win EOTY if she can’t even win FVOTY? I understand 2021, but remember many years when she had just amazing years and didn’t win? It doesn’t add up
