Carrie's Streaming Numbers

If I am not mistaken, it is 1 sale for every 1,500 streams for an album (songs is different). So you need about 15 million album streams to move "10k" copies of an album. Someone feel free to correct me if I am off.

I believe it's a bit more complicated now at least for Billboard. Billboard changed the methodology in 2018 so that for paid subscription services 1,250 streams = 1 album unit while for ad-supported streams 3,750 streams = 1 album unit.

RIAA still uses 1,500 streams = 1 album unit.

Luke Combs released one last promo song before his new album drops next week. From quickly browsing the main country and new music playlists on Spotify, I only saw his song at #2 on Hot Country #2 and #1 on New Boots. Didn't even see it on New Music Friday, yet it gained 806k streams in its first day (IIDLY got 600k). I guess his streaming is so strong and his core country demographic is so dedicated that he didn't even need all-genre visibility. His album release will be big.

Since it's interesting to compare how other country artists are doing with streaming, Luke Combs' just released his new album:

• The album had a promo banner at the top of my Spotify desktop homepage on Friday (Carrie's didn't)

  • #1 album under New Releases
  • #1 song on Hot Country playlist
  • #2 and #12 song on New Music Friday Country playlist
  • #10 song on New Boots

  • #2 album under New Albums & Singles under New Releases
  • #3 song on New Music Friday playlist

I if I recall right Luke is better featured on the all-genre New Music Friday playlist than Carrie was and had the announcement banner on the homepage, but otherwise from I think isn't too different from Carrie's debut week. But all album tracks on Luke's album got at least 300k-400k streams in its first day, and up to 970k for his current single. That's more than the album tracks on D&R have even after 2 weeks... but we always knew Luke is a bigger streamer. I wouldn't be surprised if Luke moved 30k units from streaming alone his first week.

It's also important to note that Luke is in the prime of his commercial career right now. He will probably move somewhere between 150k-200k his first week. He is nowhere near where Carrie was when she was at the prime of her commercial career (2005-2012.)

Just like Carrie will most likeily never stream like Luke does, since that's the era he became popular in, he will never move physical albums like Carrie did when that was the form of consumption.

Do y'all really stream the same songs over and over if you like them? I'm just asking for a personal survey....I feel like IF I use spotify, which is rare, then I just use it to stream an album once or just to see if there any new Pop songs out on a playlist. I think it is hard for any one song to rack up a lot of streams if people only listen to it here and there, like I do. I think in order to rack up a lot of streams you have to have many, many, many people listen to it more than once, which I just don't think is realistic...makes me wonder if there are not robots streaming these songs...hmm. I simply just don't have TIME to consume the vast amount of content that is availabe out there. I have a 20 min commute to and from work, and then I'm just bone tired and have to cook supper and do laundry. Who has time to keep up with all these songs? Just my "consumer" experience

I suspect there is a ton of manipulations on streaming - bots, favors exchanged for playlists placements and such

I listen to a variety of music but I add songs that I like to self created playlists and stream those songs more because they are the music that I like. Most of those songs get 40-50 streams over a few months. GS has been streamed by me just over 500 times and all of the D&R tracks over 100.

I agree with Madkatt that playlist placement is 100% who pays the most money and many people view Spotify as a “different outlet” to get more music. For instance, there are many artists that I listen to (Kameron Marlowe, Filmore, Carter Faith, etc) that have great Spotify streams but never even chart in the top 60 on country radio. They also are placed high on many mainstream playlists.
