ok but does the song needs to have certain sound or lyrics? what are currently “radio friendly” songs from female country artists?
I would describe radio-friendly as being a song that you can
1) Relate to on a personal level (in example- “Tennessee orange” describes how you start dating someone and suddenly begin to do things for them just because you like them so much even though without them, you wouldn’t do those things at all. Anyone that has been in love can relate to that. And it’s also relatable bc it mentions college football which is huge in a lot of country listener’s worlds. So two
for that column) This is usually the heartfelt ballads… This is why songs like “So Small” work well. This wouldn’t necessarily be the reason why songs like “TBC” or “Blown Away” worked well though. Those would be the next two reasons.
2) Has a beat and rhythm that you can enjoy without having to intently listen to the lyrics. So like if you’re driving and a song is playing in the background, it doesn’t have an annoying sound or in your face sound that would make you have a distaste for it. It either is soothing and you can enjoying it (much like “what he didn’t do” by Carly Pierce) or it has a catchy beat like most men country songs today (think Sam hunt or Morgan wallen) This is the main reason why a song like “Poor Everybody Else” wouldn’t work on country radio. It’s way too in-your-face.
3) Lastly, it has to have the sound of that genre. This has been the most vocalized reason people that aren’t huge fans of Carrie’s music voice their distaste for her music. She has teetered the line of pop and country for a while now (which I personally love) but most “country” music fans do not. To do well on country radio it has to sound country. This is why so many people on here believe “She Don’t Know” would do well. Also the reason many think “Hate My Heart” wasn’t a bad single. I just personally don’t think HMH hits the other two points very well.
I feel like you at least have to have two of these checked off to be radio friendly.
Hope that helps.
