Oct. 28—GRAND FORKS — A Carrie Underwood concert consists of glitz, glam and country rock grit. The country music star brought all that, plus fireworks, to Grand Forks as she put on a bright, flashy and stylish show for a crowd of approximately 13,000 at the Alerus Center on Thursday, Oct. 27.

Underwood rose above the stage floor singing the 2012 hit "Good Girl" around 8:45 p.m., filling the stadium with her larger-than-life voice and promising the audience a good time.

"Grand Forks, how y'all doing?" she asked a few songs in. "I hope you're ready to have a good time tonight because that's what we're going to do."

The Grand Forks show was an early stop in her "Denim & Rhinestones Tour," which kicked off Oct. 15 in Greenville, South Carolina.

Underwood is an eight-time Grammy Award winner and has been named Academy of Country Music "Entertainer of the Year" three times. Since winning the fourth season of "American Idol" in 2005, she has gone on to release nine studio albums. She has released 28 No. 1 singles, 14 of which she co-wrote.

Her most recent album, "Denim & Rhinestones," was released in June.

Deb and Rick Lee drove from Adams, North Dakota, after work to see Underwood play. Deb Lee said she has been a fan of Underwood since she won American Idol, but it was the first time she'd seen her in concert.

"It used to be that the older country singers were kind of twangy, but she's more country rock," she said. "I like her glitz and glitter."

The crowd grew as Jimmie Allen, a rising star in country music opened the concert. Allen, nominated for Best New Artist at the 2022 Grammy Awards, played a mix of original songs and country music favorites.

By the time Underwood started her set, most of the seats and much of the floor in the stadium had filled in.

The momentum of her energetic opening song carried through her set. As a fun reminder that the night would feature a heavy dose of country music, she at one point greeted the audience with a "howdy" and pointed out the two fiddlers accompanying her on stage.

"Do you say 'howdy' up here?" Underwood asked the crowd. "You do now."

Between high-energy songs, she shared a quieter moment with the audience on a separate, smaller stage in the middle of the stadium, to which she floated above the audience on a swing.

"I wanted to make sure everybody got a front-row seat at some point during the show," she said.

There, she sang her new song "Garden" and then "Jesus Take The Wheel," followed by the hymn "How Great Thou Art."

Underwood returned to the main stage, again flying above the audience accompanied by neon angel wings during the song "Crazy Angels." Allen then joined Underwood on stage to help her sing her new album's title track "Denim & Rhinestones."

After more than 20 songs and five wardrobe changes, Underwood ended her show on a rock note, covering Guns N' Roses' "Welcome to the Jungle" and closing with her biggest hit, "Before He Cheats."
so all the hand wringing was once again for naught

Is anyone going to tonights show? I just checked Ticketmaster and there are a lot of seats left
That was me, i was there! And it was incredible! I stayed the night in Grand Forks and literally just got home in Fargo here in the last hour. So, local media here in ND actually announced there was approximately 13,000 people there last night. Which, i’m curious how they get their numbers, but idk, i feel like it was more closer to around 9-10,000. Maybe i’m wrong though. Alerus Center is a bigger than usual venue because its designed for football so maybe it just seems less than it actually is. I will say though that i felt they did a good job filling in the sections that were open to make it feel more full. Bottom line, it was an amazing show, being in the pit is the way to go, imo. I really want to find one of the spring shows to travel to see it again now!

My dad went with me to her Rosemont concert. He commented on how well Carrie is doing this far into her career to bring in this many people! I trust his assessment since music is his job as a radio DJ and programmer. He’s been to countless concerts and highly praised Carrie by comparing her live vocal abilities to Whitney.

I imagine she's definitely selling out all venues, but I bet many of those buyers will resell. So, the box office numbers probably see 13,000 sold, but I wonder how many scalpers didn't sell all their tickets. Could explain the difference. Carrie still pockets her money, still a sell out, even though it screws the fans with too high ticket prices.

Well I didn’t say he was in the Country sect 😉 He has mostly stayed within Lite-Rock, Christian, and Oldies. However, music is his passion and he’s seen it all! Now he is partially retired and doing passion projects that he enjoys related to radio 😊

Speaking of attendance, I was at the Saint Paul, Minn. show. While that reviewer from the Star Trib was overly pessimistic, it was true that the 200-level was half full on a school night.

The floor was also not-so full, but not bad, just before the show started. Being that it wasn't full, I overheard staff make plans to move people down. Then sure enough, people from the 200s got escorted down to the floor, standing right next to me.

Made me bummed for the money spent. $120+ vs. $60 and I could have ended up in the same spot. Oh well.

I know Carrie's been complimented on touring like a rockstar, but there's something to be said about just touring weekends. People go out. If it weren't a Tuesday, the Target Center would have sold out, I'm sure. Granted, Storyteller Tour was on a Monday here, but CP was a Friday.

Anybody else feeling like this show feels smaller compared to CP and Storyteller Tours? Having one end blocked off with no seating and having a main, plus b-stage taking up quite a bit of the floor AND a stage that isn't as high made me feel super close. I had floor tickets to CP and I felt a mile away from the band. I definitely locked eyes with Carrie and crew multiple times and I wasn't even that close. Granted, I'm 6'8" and I stick out, but it was pretty cool to know for sure that Carrie and a couple band members smiled at me.

This was my 7th show and I'm thinking my rankings are as follows:
1. Storyteller Tour (nothing beats the first)
2 (tied). Cry Pretty Tour / D&R Tour (Friday Cry Pretty close to my birthday and a busy town for Pride was more fun, but I was closer for D&R)
4. Vegas
5. Local summer festival (2021 Twin Cities Summer Jam)
6. Local summer festival (WE Fest 2018)
DEAD last, 7. 2022 Iowa State Fair

Carrie Underwood flies high, embraces fun during BOK Center tour stop

Jimmie Tramel
For the thousands of folks who spent Halloween inside BOK Center instead of trick or treating, the “treat” was homegrown music superstar Carrie Underwood putting on a vocal and aerial show.
The ninth stop on Underwood’s Denim & Rhinestones Tour featured the Checotah songbird taking flight. By way of a swing and wings, she traveled by air from one end of the arena to the other. She was on familiar turf — and above it — all on the same Monday.
“It feels good to be home tonight,” Underwood said early in the show. “Welcome to the Denim & Rhinestones Tour. Let’s have some fun on this Halloween night, shall we?”
Later, Underwood told a story about her new album, which shares the same name as the tour. When it came time to get a game plan cooking for the album, Underwood’s co-producer asked her what she wanted to do. Her reply: “I just want to have fun.”

Underwood looked every bit like someone who was having fun inside BOK Center, whether she was singing and dancing with supporting act Jimmie Allen (he returned to team up with her on one song) or briefly playing drums (who knew she could do that?) or channeling Axl Rose during a rocking cover of “Welcome to the Jungle.”
About a third of the nearly two-hour homecoming show was devoted to material from the new album. The set list included eight of the album's 12 tracks.
Underwood plucked hits from her 17-year recording career in fleshing out the rest of the set list. She has recorded 28 No. 1 singles since a 2005 “American Idol” triumph put her on the fast track to stardom.

Maybe Simon Cowell was a prophet? Cowell was among “American Idol” judges when Underwood was among competitors on the show. He said this two months before she was crowned: “Carrie, you’re not just the girl to beat, you’re the person to beat. I’ll make a prediction: Not only will you win this show; you’ll sell more records than any other previous ‘Idol’ winner.”

Actually, Cowell undersold Underwood’s future. She has sold more than 66 million records and, in the singles department, is the most awarded female country artist in RIAA history.
Underwood was a Northeastern State University student before winning “American Idol.” She made history when her first single (“Inside Your Heaven”) helped her become the first country artist to debut at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100. Her second single, “Jesus, Take the Wheel” (she got emotional when talking about it Monday) was a No. 1 country song. You know the rest of the story — a constant stream of radio gold ever since.
Underwood opened (“Good Girl”) and closed (“Before He Cheats”) her performance with No. 1 songs and, in between, sprinkled in everything from gospel (“How Great Thou Art,” a track on her “My Savior” album) to a duet with Jason Aldean, never mind that he wasn’t in the building.

It was announced a few hours before showtime that Underwood will perform “Crazy Angels” from the new album at the 2022 American Music Awards, which is scheduled to air on ABC Nov. 20. It’s another sign that her gigs have gotten more significant since her early days in Oklahoma.
According to electronic archives, Underwood’s name first appeared in the Tulsa World on June 23, 1998. Then 15, she was listed among performers for a Woolaroc KidsFest event in Bartlesville, where the talent roster included gun-slinging ghost riders, rope-twirling Polecat Annie, Huffy the Clown, the Silver City Ramblers and magician/music man P.T. Farquar.
Underwood has gone from sharing bills with ghost riders to performing “Ghost Story” (the lead single on the new album) for an adoring home-state crowd. Said Underwood: “I feel like I’m very blessed to be from Oklahoma."

Underwood continued on with the show taking on hit after hit, as she flipped from country to rock. The production value of the set design included two stages, giving fans an up-close look at the action, no matter where they were seated.

Other visuals that stood out included the pyro and two aerial performances. Underwood soared over fans on a swing as she made her way to a second stage on the other side of the arena. She later made her way back to the diamond-cut mainstage on a pair of neon wings, while singing “Crazy Angels.” She never missed a beat or sounded out of breath.
Underwood also found time to give fans several wardrobe changes inspired by her newly released album titled “Denim & Rhinestones.”

The show had something for everyone and showcased how far Underwood has come from her early days on “American Idol.” At one point during the show, Underwood took us to church singing classics like “Jesus, Take the Wheel” and “How Great Thou Art.” She later pulls out the guitar and hits the drum kit to perform Guns N’ Roses’ “Welcome to the Jungle.”

I'm both excited and nervous to see box office numbers for the first run of shows. I suspect total revenue might be similar to Cry Pretty Tour due to the increase in ticket prices, but that overall # of tickets sold could be down.

Just got out of my show… BEST NIGHT EVER 😭😭😭😩😩😩

that was seriously the best thing I have ever been to. The best concert I’ve been to. And hands down, better than the CP tour. Carrie just did so so good!! The music… the visuals… the FLYING… and Carrie gave every single song her ALL. She put her whole heart, soul, and body into every single song. Performed with such fun and passion. She held glory notes for longer than I’ve ever heard!! This was the loudest Carrie show I’ve ever heard and at one point, I think Carrie was truly happy and surprised at how long and loud we applauded and cheered for her (applause following CP). I am Sad now! I want to go again. I just may have to. My mom came with me, she is not a huge Carrie fan like us, and she absolutely LOVED the show. She kept remarking the whole time “wow!” “Wow that was amazing!!” And said at the end “wow that was so good! She did such a good show” and kept talking about just how amazing the show was - and how Carrie puts her all into the concert. How she is a way better performer than most artists are today- who just stand and Sing!

I’ll say More after I find my car in this crowd of 15000 people, but in case there was any doubt about it - Carrie is the greatest, best entertainer of our generation. Give her the damn award!!!

Oh, and by the way, Carrie is drop dead gorgeous in person.
