Carrie's Maria has a vulnerability that Julie's Maria does not have. In some cases, I think they made Julie's Maria too strong. Because of that for example, the Climb Ev'ry Mountain scene in the movie has almost no emotional impact at all. But with Carrie's emotional Maria and Audra's strong and motherly portrayal of Mother Abbess, the same scene in SOML has a huge emotion impact.
Very well said. I agree.

I'll have to try re-watching the movie at some point. I've only seen it once, last year after the project with Carrie was announced. But to be honest, I don't remember half the film because I was having a hard time paying attention. I just wasn't connecting to any of the characters/actors. I know it's a legendary film that almost everyone seems to love, but it might just not be my cup of tea. The idea that Julie played a very strong Maria seems so odd to me, since when I think of a young, sheltered, would-be nun, I think of the type of portrayal of Carrie's Maria.

I agree with your last sentence. Carrie played her part exactly how a would-be nun character would be. The Julie movie version character was actually out of character for a person in the middle of a religious decision and for the times. (WWII era)

I've never seen the original TSOM, but I watched a few minutes of it when it aired on ABC, and I thought it came across as quite outdated. IMO, Carrie brought a fresh prospective to Maria's character, and probably brought the film to a new generation that would not watch it otherwise.

Julie also had almost 20 years of acting experience under her belt before TSOM; acting has always been her main focus.

I agree!!! VERY WELL SAID!!!

I love ALSO the ICONIC MOVIE, but, I never had a tear watching it.

Carrie emotes a very genuine feeling in her character. Julie is more of a playful and hyper Maria. Like it should be, they are different in so many levels. One's a musical, the other's a movie. One's live singing with one-take acting while the other is playback soundtrack with multiple performance takes. I personally feel that Carrie's Maria gets to me more on a deeper level. One thing i wished was that it was longer, so that more scenes can be included. It'd be even better.

speaking of noticing things ,I was watching Edelweiss on youtube and noticed at 1:45 Carrie /Maria is looking into the audience and appears to have to stifle a laugh. What was that audience doing?? lol

Edelweiss - The Sound of Music, Live! - YouTube

I missed that one. Even looking for it, you have to watch closely to see that one. And I caught one other thing when looking for that. Shortly before the family joins in and the lights are still low, Friedrich puts his arm around Carrie's shoulder. There are just some many little details to appreciate about SOML that most people will never take the time to discover. And I believe a lot of this moments are from real emotions from the relationships formed during the 2 months of preparation for the SOML.

I watched the movie last night. It has been a long time since I last saw it. Like millions of others, I now feel qualified and compelled to critique. Julie's ugly abbey dress was much uglier than Carrie's and Julie's wedding dress was prettier. Just in case it becomes a controversy, I want to be the first to say it.

Julie's dress might be prettier but Carrie's wedding was sweeter( and Carrie prettier)! :)
Really though like most of Carrie's portrayal of Maria the wedding was much more emotional and real.
That moment when the Rev Mother tells her she's beautiful and she smiles *sigh* and that whole walk down the aisle... from happy, to a little scared ,to joyous....I loved it.

I had noticed the hand, and I agree I think things like that come from the closeness developed during the whole process of bringing SOM to TV.

No controversy here, just opinion. While Julie's wedding dress, in your opinion, was prettier, Our bride was and is prettier also. Jmo

I was going to point that out also after watching the movie last night. I thought wow Julie's Maria and Mother Abbess showed very little emotion in that scene versus Carrie's Maria and Audra and it was even shot differently by keeping a certain "distance" between the two in the movie. I had not remembered that until seeing it again and remembering how Carrie and Audra played it. Loved how they did it in SOML now that I watched both again. I guess it was just done from a different perspective.

I must say this again. The so called critics can just suck it. As a critic I think miss underwood was just great in the TSOML. Now I am just as relevant as all the other pompous asses who dane to judge Carrie's acting when they cannot.

I agree!!! VERY WELL SAID!!! NEVER MIND THOSE critics. THOSE critics are IRRELEVANT!!! "The BEST REVENGE is **MASSIVE** SUCCESS"!!!

In my opinion, Julie Andrews play a happier Maria than Carrie. In my opinion, Carrie played Maria perfectly (not too happy and with a little bit of sadness) because at the end Carrie must leave the Van Trapp family especially the Captain who will marry another lady.

In short, now that I am able to compare Julie's version and Carrie's, I think Julie's version is too happy and Carrie's version is just right !
