Very well said. I agree.Carrie's Maria has a vulnerability that Julie's Maria does not have. In some cases, I think they made Julie's Maria too strong. Because of that for example, the Climb Ev'ry Mountain scene in the movie has almost no emotional impact at all. But with Carrie's emotional Maria and Audra's strong and motherly portrayal of Mother Abbess, the same scene in SOML has a huge emotion impact.
I'll have to try re-watching the movie at some point. I've only seen it once, last year after the project with Carrie was announced. But to be honest, I don't remember half the film because I was having a hard time paying attention. I just wasn't connecting to any of the characters/actors. I know it's a legendary film that almost everyone seems to love, but it might just not be my cup of tea. The idea that Julie played a very strong Maria seems so odd to me, since when I think of a young, sheltered, would-be nun, I think of the type of portrayal of Carrie's Maria.
I agree!!! VERY WELL SAID!!!
I love ALSO the ICONIC MOVIE, but, I never had a tear watching it.
speaking of noticing things ,I was watching Edelweiss on youtube and noticed at 1:45 Carrie /Maria is looking into the audience and appears to have to stifle a laugh. What was that audience doing?? lol

I missed that one. Even looking for it, you have to watch closely to see that one. And I caught one other thing when looking for that. Shortly before the family joins in and the lights are still low, Friedrich puts his arm around Carrie's shoulder. There are just some many little details to appreciate about SOML that most people will never take the time to discover. And I believe a lot of this moments are from real emotions from the relationships formed during the 2 months of preparation for the SOML.
One Carrie fan said she is watching the film with her little girl, and the daughter keeps correcting the lines and song sequence according to Carrie's!
just to see if SOML boosted the movie's ratings this year here are last years numbers
ABC The Sound of Music (7-11PM) 1.1/3 5.23
I watched the movie last night. It has been a long time since I last saw it. Like millions of others, I now feel qualified and compelled to critique. Julie's ugly abbey dress was much uglier than Carrie's and Julie's wedding dress was prettier. Just in case it becomes a controversy, I want to be the first to say it.
It got a little bump. (1.3/4, 6.51 million viewers)

I must say this again. The so called critics can just suck it. As a critic I think miss underwood was just great in the TSOML. Now I am just as relevant as all the other pompous asses who dane to judge Carrie's acting when they cannot.
