I hope she leaves them sooner rather than later. Their management of her career has been malpractice. Had they been managing a legacy artist or someone resigned to legacy status, it might have been acceptable. But for an artist of Carrie's stature with stated plans to expand worldwide reach through the platform Universal offers, their efforts have been disjointed, shortsighted, unimaginative and weak.
I almost feel like her label didn't want her to succeed, but that makes no sense, so I'm at a loss. My conclusion is that she jump ship if she can and start fresh.

Something interesting I noticed on the chart I felt was worth sharing. I sort of think that Capitol/UMG are spending less on radio promotion.

Carrie's label is Capital Nashville. Last week, Capitol's songs on the chart, Carrie/OOTT included, all had a really high bullet, ranging from 150-350.

This week? Every song on the chart by Capitol lost the bullet. Every. Single. One. For instance, last week, Tyler Hubbard had a bullet of 370. Today, he has a bullet of -5.

Why might this have happened? I have a theory. Yesterday, Capitol sponsored (bought) a clear channel deal for Jon Pardi (also on Capitol, of course). It is possible this took the money they had for promotion this week. Why do I think this? The clear channel deal would have been paid for by Thursday (since it is on Friday). Carrie lost spins/audience every day this week...until Friday...when hypothetically they could begin spending money on promotion again.

This all could be nothing, but it is an interesting theory. I just do not think it is a coincidence that last week every Capitol song was doing great and a week later today, every single one has lost the bullet.

^ Capitol only had two songs on the chart - Carrie's and Luke's and yes with the CC deal ( for Pardi's duet with Bryan) naturally radio would pull spins from those songs to help cover the big spin gain of the new song as well as from lots of other songs. There's only so many spins to go around. The curious thing to note to me is that of the 8 women on the chart only two Moroney (+2) and Barrett (+30) have +bullets.

OOTT remains at #34 (+4/+.081)
34 CARRIE UNDERWOOD Out Of That Truck 1475 1566 -91 4.505

it will move to #33 this afternoon with recurrents removed

I'll quote Grady Smith on this cause I think it suits Carrie's problem: "Artists that have managed to captured the imagination of the internet, that can reach the culture directly and reach their fans directly are the one that are streaming well. And people relying on old models or radio models, you know, you don't see them represented there as the most relevant artists on the game."

Capitol had three songs on the chart, Carrie, Luke, and Dierks, but I guess I should expand it to UMG as a whole because the number goes up even more with the other divisions represented. I accidentally put Tyler on Capitol but it makes me think it’s a UMG problem since he went from 350 a week ago to -50 bullet today. And like, Luke went from 250 to -20

but would they pull spins from songs to cover the gain of a new song before the clear channel? i would expect it to be after but Carrie had negative updates before the radio deal and positive every day since it

But sadly you are right about the women on the chart. I have a theory that because Lainey has been at the top for 3 weeks, radio was only giving her spins and refusing to play any other woman while she was at #1 levels. but yes, it is curious to note indeed 😕

This podcaster makes a point that I have been considering for awhile. Part of the common denominator with top artists connecting with streaming right now is that their listeners feel a connection to them. This era's aesthetics are glamour, fringe and over-the-top fashion, etc. This has become part of what Carrie is known for, which can be seen as dramatic and unattainable. Her story songs are often epic narratives that do not reveal who she is as a person or artist. When you combine this with her personal focus on fitness and nutrition/gardening, it may unintentionally make her seem less relatable or disconnected from the average person/listener. Carrie is beautiful with a voice that is unmatched. She holds her true personality back for those close to her and who she knows best. You see this in media interviews often, where her answers appear somewhat formulaic and robotic. When you factor this in with her natural shyness and limited social media engagement (aside from what the label produces or her own posts about fitness and gardening), this may be a barrier to "breaking through" to new audiences. It is hard to imagine someone who has been in the business for nearly 20 years needing some media training, but I think it might help her shake up how she engages a bit - if she wants to increase her commercial reach. The next era may call for a less air-brushed Carrie in promotional photos, with more of a focus on connecting with every audience (television, social platforms, etc.). Even more detailed discussions about her creative process and songwriting might connect better than nutrition and fitness, which seems to be the only topics that inspire her to truly open up.
