Jennifer Nettles has an extremely pronounced twang. If you don't like twang, you probably won't like 95% of her vocals.
I personally love Mama's Broken Heart, and it's been my favourite song off 'Four the Record' since that album came out (I don't listen to much of the rest of the album anymore).
True about Jen N.
And it kind of makes my point. there are times when it doesn't bother me at all in the context of a song.
I love "Love, your baby girl" (I think that is the name of the song).
And there are others of hers that i like.
I think early on she made an effort to sing with a fuller more mainstream tone in her voice. (that may have been completely unintentional or fully intentional not sure).
But when they broke real big and came out with the album after they were huge, it became very pronounced to me. As if she were leaning into it to give the music a more authentic vibe.
And truth is, I think that effects it negatively when it is too pronounced. When a singer sings, that drawl or twang shoud actually diminish, not increase. Just like you can't detect an accent when someone is singing.
So I am a bit sensitive when I think someone is intentionally using "effected" vowels in order to "sound country".
I don't think Miranda does it. But I do think she intentionally creates music that she thinks "sounds country". And that effects my interest in it abit.
Reba is about the only person I can think of that has such a strong drawl that it comes out in her music automatically, but also authentically. Like the music and the voice are perfectly married.
Some of Mirandas sounds like that, and some of it sounds "affected'.
