It's been sometime since I've been on this forum great to see that it is still thriving which is not surprising at all.I just stumbled on a female artist from Canada Meghan Patrick heard her on the Windsor station in my car.Anyways looked her up on youtube and listened to several songs and she's quite good bought both of her albums and she has an EP album released this year Wild As Me.Here is one of her older videos from two years ago which is one of my favorites.

For those of us who are frustrated by the attitude of radio and of some other parts of the Country Music establishment, it is still the case that change can come, if there is determination and a concerted effort at all levels.

A generation or more ago, a similar culture of bias and resistance to change existed in parts of the Bluegrass community, to the extent that women were forming their own bands to try to redress the problems of recognition. The point is that the IBMA recognized the issue and led from the top, facing up to the inequality and working to overcome it. This video is from the first IBMA award show, in 1991. It features an all-women showcase performance, with Alison Brown on banjo, Alison Krauss on mandolin and vocals, Andrea Zonn on fiddle, Lynn Morris on guitar and Missy Raines on bass. Although, sadly, Lynn Morris had her talented and successful career on Rounder Records cut short by a serious stroke , all the others are still recognized as leading figures in the genre as a whole. Women have continued to be recognized in all categories at the award show, and special attention has been paid to encouraging younger female artists to perform on all instruments, singly and in ensembles. It can be done - but it takes a determined approach from the organizations, as well as from the performers and the audiences.

Oh my God, this is so nice! Sometimes I forget how much I love Bluegrass music.

I agree with the need for institutional-led reform. CMT was perhaps the first to take that step with the all-female Artists of the Year last year and now the CMAs are doing that (this is the first time in CMA history that all categories have at least one female nominee except for MVOTY of course). I would even say that recent all-female tours are doing a lot to bring actual systemic changes too. The ACMs this year weren't bad either and I expect there to be even more pressure next year. (And I just remembered their Girls Night Out segment a few years ago. In retrospect, I think it was a great step in shining light on the iconic women in the genre and might be needed even more today.)

Radio still seems to be an institution that is very difficult to budge and I am not entirely sure what could be done to change that. But at least in terms of visibility on TV and awards recognition, there is a shift and hopefully it will shift even more, regardless of commercial success/high chart positions.

Generally wondering - maybe the labels could start spending more money on female country artists because they need the extra boost?

Billboard's Country Update have a commentary of Jenée Fleenor's nomination for CMA Musician of the Year

For those who don't want to download the whole issue, it's basically saying that hers is the first female nomination in 53 years (and she is the first to be noticed at that level after the 265 male nominations that preceded her!). It also mentions some of the hit records she's played on.

The long absence of female instrumentalists at the CMA is in marked contrast to the situation I referred to above, at the IBMA, where there have been both nominations and wins in non-vocal categories for years.

It's worth bearing in mind though that many commentators and voters do not give this CMA category the recognition it really ought to receive - (Country Music, in particular, has always had a sound shaped by its distinctive instrumental contributions.) Voting here, though, often seems perfunctory - guitar seems to be always given prominence, and the same artist (Mac MacAnally) has won for something like 11 years. Hence a nomination, while important - and indeed groundbreaking - is hopefully not the end of the story)

I haven't heard a lot of songs by Lori McKenna but I'm so glad I came across this one years ago. It leaves an impact on me every time I listen to it. I love the relatively stripped down production. The lyrics and the heavy emotion her vocals carry just hit me. I wish Carrie or Miranda would record something like this.

I love Sheryl Crow and her music, even though sometimes it's a bit too out of the field of my tastes. And I'm so glad she has made appearances in the country genre throughout her career.
I was watching videos on YouTube when I came across this. I don't know much about Shelby Lynn (although just found out she is Allison Moorer's sister) but I was quite surprised to see this performance. Never knew they had collaborated.

Sheryl Crow is highly respected and influential on the Alt Country scene, even though, as you say, much of her work has veered into Pop-Rock

Shelby and Allison are indeed sisters (Shelby being the elder one). As children, they had one of the most tragic experiences of anyone in the music world - they heard gunshots, and rushed outside, to find that their father had killed their mother, and then himself. I can hardly imagine the impact that must have had on the two girls.
They have both been early musical influences on Miranda Lambert (Allison wrote "Oklahoma Sky" as a (first) wedding present for Miranda, and Miranda adopted the name "Shelby Shelton" when she took part in one of Dierks Bentley's musical satire routines

^ It is Allison and Shelby who are the sisters (Sheryl is unrelated, and just happens to be singing with Shelby in that video)

As for the tragedy, it occurred when Allison was 14, and Shelby about three years older. I'm not sure, but I think Allison was then raised by an aunt after their parents' death. Shelby was active in music soon after, and Allison later joined her band until starting her own solo career.

There is an extensive interview with Shelby at this link, where she says that for years she would not talk publicly about the tragedy - but not because she had not come to terms with it, but rather because she did not want people to identify her and her work solely or largely with that incident. She has remained a private person about other aspects of her life, as can also be seen in the well-explained answers that she gives when the interviewer presses her with questions about her sexuality.
