I can't recall if they have been featured here before, but Baskery are, in my opinion, one of the most dynamic performance trios around today. They have been performing for about ten years, and have released about four albums. They did spend some time in America, but are probably better known in Europe. They are the Bondesson sisters - the eldest, Greta, plays twin drums with her feet, while playing slide on a guitar-banjo hybrid, and sometimes playing mouth organ, The middle sister, Sunniva, plays acoustic guitar, and sings lead, with harmonies from her sisters. The youngest, Stella, plays slap bass fiddle.

This is a live performance, in Germany, of one of their early songs "One Horse Down"

This reminds me of the Dixie Chicks' setlist at the Kodak Theatre where they performed Home in its entirety.

Deserves a special mention among the lyrics of the year! It's feminist, without pretension, and makes it's point in a way that I'd expect quite a few could relate to. She wrote it with Josh Kerr (who's also worked with Kelsea Ballerini, Danielle Bradberry & Maddie & Tae), and Emily Weisband (a Song Suffragette, who has is currently one of the most in-demand younger songwriters on the contemporary scene)

I've loved Grace Potter since she was part of her band Grace Potter and the Nocturnals. Willie Nelson also featured on one of their songs called "Ragged Company" which they had originally done by themselves and later included Willie on a version that was part of a subsequent album. Her voice is amazing and she brings out very strong emotions in all the songs she does.

Randomly stumbled upon her on YouTube and loved her voice. I was listening to her on YouTube because loved her voice. There is video where she is called "lesbian Patsy Cline" (she was trying to get her more attention with mentioning famous country singer). It turns out she was the first open lesbian singer in country music. Just thought it was interesting country music History.

When country singer Chely Wright revealed to her fanbase that she was a lesbian back in 2010, many of the magazine articles at the time referenced k.d. lang or Melissa Etheridge, to name two earlier gay performers who opted to be true to themselves in public, but very few mentioned an even earlier lesbian country music singer to come out of the closet.

Actually, Wilma Burgess, who had several hit singles in the mid-1960s was never in the closet to begin with. Burgess was a protege of the great country music producer Owen Bradley, one of the chief architects of the slick, string-laden “Nashville sound” of the 50s and 60s. Bradley, who had been Patsy Cline’s producer, heard in Burgess’ powerful voice a performer able to do something similar to the deceased singer and he signed her to Decca Records in June of 1964. Interestingly Burgess was reluctant to perform teary ballads where she was singing to a man, and preferred her material to be gender neutral and ambiguous. When she did agree to sing a song like “Ain’t Got No Man” it was something she negotiated with her powerful hit-maker mentor: One song she liked but that he didn’t have to, for every one of his choices that she went along with but wasn’t too fond of. Their partnership worked well and produced several hits, most notably the Grammy-nominated “Baby,” a 1965 hit Burgess was seen singing in the Jayne Mansfield B-movie The Las Vegas Hillbillys, and “Misty Blue” in 1967.


For obvious reasons, Wilma Burgess ultimately found herself frustrated by the strict and ostensibly pious Nashville scene and left the music business in 1978. She would go on to open The Hitching Post, the first lesbian bar in Nashville, in the late 80s with the money she made during her career. Wilma Burgess died at the age of 64 from a heart attack on August 26th, 2003.

I know it's not women but still had me excited, yesterday on The Hits (a popular radio station in New Zealand) they played 10,000 hours by Dan+Shay feat Justin Bieber.
This was exciting because NZ radio stations like The Hits do not really play Country music. If they do it's like old school Shania Twain, nothing modern.
The only other artist that's recent I've heard them play is Sam Hunt (Body Like A Backroad was popular here).
It's also number 17 on our Top 40 charts - peaked at 11 which is still very very impressive as Country songs usually don't a) get released to NZ radio and b) don't make it very far on the NZ charts (not that I've seen)
So congrats to Dan+Shay.

Nice..... Never knew here until she sang with Kenny Chesney on "You and Tequila" and her voice was captivating..... Wishing you could have heard more of her voice on the song...

i thought I might post videos for some of the female Grammy nominees, that some posters might not be so familiar with:

This is Yola (Yolanda Quartey), who has the rather rare distinction of being a Black English artist who leans to Country Music, but also blending this with other Roots influences. Remarkably, she was unable to listen to music growing up, for family reasons (possibly religious, but I'm not sure of their exact reason). She comes from Bristol, and has gained considerable attention in a relatively short period of time, winning Best UK Artist at the UK Americana Awards, being nominated for Emerging Artist at the US AMAs, and now gaining four nominations at the upcoming Grammys (Best New Artist, Best Americana Album, Best American Roots Performance, Best American Roots Song)

Missy Raines has been active in Bluegrass for some three decades, appearing with several bands, and being best known as a bass player. She has won seven IBMAs, and is currently nominated for Best Bluegrass Album. This Progressively-styled number is the title track from her new album, "Royal Traveller" and showcases her talent as a vocalist:

I'm With Her are a trio of singer-instrumentalists, who are also all well established artists with their own careers. They are nominated for "Call My Name" in Best Roots Performance. Their harmonies are impressive in this song - Texas multi-instrumentalist, Sarah Jarosz (who also won the Grammy in this category in 2017), sings lead, Sara Watkins (formally in the group Nickel Creek, now a solo artist) is on the left, and Aofe O'Donovan (who also performs in the group Crooked Still) is to the right.
